Description

BPI-R64 PoE module (BPI-7402): power the Banana Pi router through the network cable

The BPI-7402 is the PoE (Power over Ethernet) module designed by Banana Pi for the Banana Pi BPI-R64. It draws power from a category 5 Ethernet cable compliant with IEEE 802.3af / 802.3at and converts it to 12 V / 2 A, exactly the supply voltage and current of the R64. The result: a single cable for data and power, with no mains adapter near the router.

Highlights

  • Up to 30 W of output power, PoE class 4.
  • Wide input range : 36 to 57 V, compatible with standard PoE switches and injectors.
  • 1,000 V transformer isolation between input and output.
  • High-efficiency DC/DC converter, low ripple and short-circuit protection.
  • Polarity insensitive : accepts power on the data pairs (1-2 / 3-6) or on the spare pairs (4-5 / 7-8).

Target board Banana Pi BPI-R64

Which one should you choose?

Module Target board Output Insulation Assembly
BPI-7402 BPI-R64 12 V, 30 W max 1,000 V On the PoE interface provided on the R64
BPI-5400B BPI-F3 12 V (RT5400B variant), 30 W max 1,500 V To be soldered onto the board

Each module is matched to its board: choose the BPI-7402 for an R64, the BPI-5400B for a BPI-F3.

Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid

  • A PoE source is required : a switch or an 802.3af/at injector. An ordinary network cable connected to a home router provides no power.
  • Class 4 and older equipment : 802.3af or 802.3at type 1 equipment will treat the module as class 0, i.e. at most 15.4 W on the source side. To get the full 30 W, use an 802.3at (PoE+) source.
  • Software negotiation : some switches only deliver 15.4 W until they receive type 2 confirmation through the data link layer.
  • Power budget : with a SATA drive, a 4G modem and USB sticks, keep a margin below 30 W.
  • For the R64 only : its 12 V output is not suitable for boards powered at 5 V.

Step-by-step setup

  • Switch off the R64 and unplug the 12 V power adapter.
  • Install the module on the PoE interface provided by Banana Pi, observing its orientation.
  • Connect the R64's WAN or LAN port to a PoE port on your switch or to the “PoE” output of an injector.
  • Check the detected class and allocated power in the switch interface, then monitor stability on first boot.

Recommended accessories

Uses

  • R64 router or access point installed on a ceiling, in a false ceiling or in a cabinet without a power outlet.
  • IoT gateway in a sheltered outdoor location, powered from the equipment room.
  • Understand PoE before wiring: read PoE: power and connect with a single cable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BPI-7402 compatible with the BPI-R64?

Yes, it is the PoE module presented by Banana Pi for the R64, which has an interface designed to accept it.

How much power does it provide?

Up to 30 W, at 12 V / 2 A, provided the source is 802.3at.

Does it work with an 802.3af PoE switch?

Yes, but the source will see it as class 0 and limit the power to 15.4 W, which may be enough for a lightly loaded R64.

Do I still need the 12 V mains adapter?

No, once the module is installed and the PoE source is connected, the network cable is all you need.

Is it protected against wiring errors?

It is polarity insensitive and protected against output short circuits.
