Description

Banana Pi BPI-F2P: industrial board with RS232, RS485, TPM 2.0 and PoE

The Banana Pi BPI-F2P is an industrial control board built around the Sunplus SP7021 “Plus1” SoC. Banana Pi designed it for industrial gateways: two Ethernet ports, RS232 and RS485 serial links, a TPM 2.0 security chip, PoE via a module and an extended temperature range from -40 to +85 °C. It is a robust foundation for connecting PLCs, meters or field sensors to an IP network.

Highlights

  • Three processors in one : four Cortex-A7 cores at 1 GHz for Linux, an ARM926 core for real-time tasks and a low-power 8051 core for I/O.
  • RS232 and RS485 to communicate with industrial equipment (Modbus, PLCs, meters).
  • TPM 2.0 (ST33TPH2EI2C) to store keys and certificates securely.
  • Two 10/100 Ethernet ports and PoE via an optional module.
  • 8 GB of eMMC plus a microSD slot.
  • Battery interfaces : input for a 7.4 V lithium battery and RTC battery connector.

Which one should you choose?

Model Processor Network Who is it for?
BPI-F2P SP7021, 4 x Cortex-A7 + ARM926 + 8051 2 x 10/100, optional PoE Secure RS232/RS485 serial gateway
BPI-F3 SpacemiT K1, 8 RISC-V cores, 2 TOPS AI 2 x Gigabit, Wi-Fi Edge computing, vision, NAS
BPI-M2 Berry Allwinner A40i/R40/V40, 4 x Cortex-A7 Gigabit, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth SATA storage, general-purpose IoT
EDATEC ED-IPC1100 Raspberry Pi CM0 4G, RS485 Industrial DIN rail mini PC

The F2P is aimed at integrators who want an open board with serial links and hardware security. If you need computing power or AI, the BPI-F3 is better suited; for a finished product in a DIN enclosure, look at the ED-IPC1100.

Compatibility and pitfalls

  • No built-in Wi-Fi : Banana Pi offers an optional SDIO Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board or a USB module.
  • 12 V power supply via jack: do not connect a 5 V USB power supply.
  • 10/100 Ethernet and not Gigabit: sufficient for telemetry, not for massive file transfers.
  • 32-bit board : the official images are Ubuntu 20.04 (server and MATE) and a Yocto-based Linux distribution.
  • A BPI-F2P-SUB daughterboard is available to add two SATA ports and a 4G module.

Recommended accessories

Uses and projects

  • Modbus RTU to IP gateway : reading meters or PLCs over RS485 and reporting to a supervisory system.
  • Building monitoring : collecting field data and sending it to a server.
  • Secure terminal : key storage in the TPM 2.0 chip.
  • Station in cold or hot environments thanks to the -40 to +85 °C range.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BPI-F2P have Wi-Fi?

No, not natively. Banana Pi offers an optional SDIO Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board or a USB module.

Which power supply for the BPI-F2P?

A 12 V DC power supply via jack. The board also accepts a 7.4 V lithium battery on its dedicated connector.

Does the BPI-F2P support PoE?

Yes, with a PoE module added to the board.

Which operating system should I install?

Banana Pi publishes Ubuntu 20.04 server and MATE images, and Sunplus provides a Yocto-based Linux distribution.

What temperature range?

The board is rated for -40 to +85 °C, like the SP7021 SoC.

Can I add SATA or 4G?

Yes, via the BPI-F2P-SUB daughterboard designed by Banana Pi (two SATA ports and a 4G slot).
