Description
Raspberry Pi 5 1GB: all the power of the Pi 5 for lightweight projects
The Raspberry Pi 5 1 GB is the entry-level version of the Raspberry Pi 5 range. It keeps the same Cortex-A76 at 2.4 GHz, the same PCIe port, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and the two 4K outputs as the higher-memory versions; only the memory changes. It is an excellent choice for network services, IoT and headless embedded projects, where computing power matters more than the amount of RAM.
Highlights
- Pi 5 processor : two to three times faster CPU performance than the Raspberry Pi 4, according to Raspberry Pi.
- PCIe 2.0 x1 for an NVMe SSD via an M.2 HAT, much faster and more reliable than a microSD card.
- Real-time clock and power button built in, a first on a Raspberry Pi Model B.
- Full connectivity : 2 × USB 3.0, 2 × USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0.
- Compatible with the entire Pi 5 ecosystem : cases, HATs, coolers.

Compatibility: what 1 GB can and cannot do
- Ideal : Raspberry Pi OS Lite, lightweight servers, DNS and ad blocking, VPN, MQTT, monitoring, IoT controllers, GPIO projects.
- Home Assistant OS : Home Assistant requires at least 2 GB of RAM. For home automation, choose a Pi 5 with more memory or a dedicated kit.
- Graphical desktop : usable for simple tasks, but quickly limited with a modern web browser.
- Pi 4 accessories : Pi 4 cases and PoE HATs are not suitable.
- Cameras and displays with a 15-pin ribbon cable: you need a standard-to-mini adapter cable.
What else you need
- The official 27 W USB-C power supply : it delivers the 5 V 5 A that the Pi 5 negotiates to fully power its USB ports.
- The official fan / heatsink or the official Raspberry Pi 5 case with fan, recommended for sustained loads.
- A SanDisk Ultra microSD card to get started, or an SSD via the HAT+ M.2 for Raspberry Pi 5.
- The official micro-HDMI to HDMI cable if you connect a display.
Need more memory? The Raspberry Pi 5 8 GB is the obvious choice for desktop use and home automation. Discover the full Raspberry Pi 5 range.
Uses and projects
- Network ad filter : read Pi-hole on Raspberry Pi.
- Serveur VPN WireGuard to access your network remotely.
- Passerelle IoT : MQTT broker, sensor data collection, lightweight Node-RED.
- Embedded controller or kiosk driven by GPIO.
Frequently asked questions
What are the differences between the Raspberry Pi 5 1 GB and the other versions?
Only the amount of RAM. Processor, GPU, connectivity, PCIe and form factor are identical on all Raspberry Pi 5 versions.
Which CPU powers the Raspberry Pi 5?
A Broadcom BCM2712 with four 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.4 GHz, with 512 KB of L2 cache per core and 2 MB of shared L3 cache.
Which system image should I install on a Raspberry Pi 5 1 GB?
Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit, written with Raspberry Pi Imager: without a desktop, it leaves as much memory as possible for your services.
Can Home Assistant be installed on it?
It is not recommended: Home Assistant requires at least 2 GB of RAM on Raspberry Pi 4 or 5.
Do I need a 27 W power supply?
It is recommended. The Pi 5 boots with 5 V 3 A, but then limits the current supplied to its USB ports.
