Description
Official M.2 HAT+: the Raspberry Pi 5 M.2 HAT for adding an NVMe SSD
The official M.2 HAT+ connects the Raspberry Pi 5's PCI Express connector to an M.2 M key slot. You install a 2230 or 2242 NVMe SSD in it and your Raspberry Pi boots and runs on storage that is much faster and more durable than a microSD card, up to 500 MB/s over PCIe 2.0. Compliant with the HAT+ specification, it is detected automatically by Raspberry Pi OS.
Highlights
- Up to 500 MB/s over single-lane PCIe 2.0, for a responsive system and fast transfers.
- SSD boot supported by the Raspberry Pi 5.
- Active Cooler compatible : the 16 mm stacking header and threaded standoffs leave room for the official cooler.
- Up to 3 A supplied to the M.2 device.
- Power and activity LEDs to check operation at a glance.
- Everything is supplied for assembly, including the thumb screw that holds the SSD.

Which one to choose? M.2 HAT+, M.2 HAT+ Compact or NVMe Base
| Model | Assembly | SSD formats | With official case | With Active Cooler |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M.2 HAT+ | On top of the board | 2230, 2242 | Only without lid or fan | Yes |
| M.2 HAT+ Compact | On top, reduced size | 2230 | Yes, fan retained | No |
| NVMe Base for Raspberry Pi 5 | Under the board | 2230 à 2280 | No | Yes |
Tip: for a bare Raspberry Pi 5 or one with an Active Cooler, choose this standard M.2 HAT+, which also accepts 2242 SSDs. In the official case, choose the Compact version. For a 2280 SSD, the NVMe Base is the solution.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Raspberry Pi 5 only : other models do not have the PCIe connector.
- No 2280 SSDs and no M.2 SATA SSDs: M key NVMe only.
- A+E key modules (accelerators, Wi-Fi cards in A+E format): not compatible with the M key slot.
- Only one PCIe port on the Pi 5: another PCIe HAT cannot be used at the same time.
- Boîtier officiel : the standard HAT only fits if you remove the lid and fan.
- NVMe boot : update the system and bootloader, then select NVMe in the boot order via raspi-config.
Recommended accessories
- WaveShare M.2 2242 NVMe SSD : a format accepted by the standard HAT.
- Official Active Cooler : fits under the HAT thanks to the supplied standoffs.
- USB-C 27 W power supply : leaves headroom for the SSD and USB peripherals.
Uses and projects
- Cloud personnel : Nextcloud or Immich benefit directly from the NVMe's fast random access.
- Serveur multimédia : more responsive Jellyfin or Plex library and database.
- Workstation : much faster boot and application launch.
- Serveur domotique : no more microSD wear from continuous writes.

Frequently asked questions
What speed does an SSD reach on the M.2 HAT+?
The PCIe 2.0 x1 interface offers up to 500 MB/s peak, several times the throughput of a microSD card.
Can the Raspberry Pi 5 boot from the SSD?
Yes. With an up-to-date bootloader, select the NVMe option in the raspi-config boot order.
What size of SSD should I choose?
An M key NVMe SSD in 2230 or 2242 format. 2280 formats do not fit on this HAT.
Is it compatible with the official case?
Only without the lid or fan. To keep the complete case, choose the M.2 HAT+ Compact.
Can I keep the Active Cooler?
Yes, the supplied standoffs and 16 mm header are designed for that.
Do I need a particular power supply?
The official 27 W power supply is recommended to power the SSD and USB peripherals with peace of mind.
