Our advice: for a Pi 5 that boots from an SSD or powers a 2.5-inch drive, choose the 45 W. For a Pi 5 used for office work or home automation without large peripherals, the 27 W is enough. For a Raspberry Pi 4, the 15.3 W remains the natural choice, although the 45 W also works.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- Compatible : Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi 500, Raspberry Pi 500+, Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 400, as well as USB PD devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) within the 45 W limit.
- Pi 4 and Pi 400 : they only need 5 V; the 45 W powers them without any problem, but they do not use the additional profiles.
- No micro-USB : a Pi 3 or a Pi Zero requires a micro-USB power supply.
- PPS not documented : Raspberry Pi does not mention PPS mode (programmable voltage). Do not count on it for the specific fast charging of some smartphones.
- 45 W in total : a power-hungry laptop will charge more slowly than with its original charger if it requires more.
