Description
Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 (v3 camera): 12 MP, autofocus and HDR
The official Camera Module 3 is the reference camera for Raspberry Pi: an 11.9-megapixel back-illuminated stacked Sony IMX708 sensor, fast phase-detection autofocus and HDR mode. It records in Full HD, takes photos at 4608 x 2592 pixels and is easily controlled in Python with Picamera2 or from the command line. Two lens options are available: standard 75° for classic framing, wide-angle 120° to cover an entire room.
Highlights
- Phase-detection autofocus : fast focusing from 10 cm (5 cm on the wide-angle version).
- HDR up to 3 megapixels for high-contrast scenes.
- Smooth video : 1080p50, 720p100, 480p120.
- Sony IMX708 sensor with defective pixel correction and a good signal-to-noise ratio.
- Same mounting as the v2 module : identical mounting holes and board size.
- Native support by libcamera, rpicam-apps and Picamera2.
- Guaranteed production until at least January 2030.

Which one to choose? Camera Module 3, infrared version, v2 or AI Camera
| Camera | Sensor | Focus | Key strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera Module 3 | IMX708 11.9 MP | Autofocus | Versatile: photo, video, daytime surveillance |
| Camera Module v3 Infrared | IMX708 11.9 MP without IR filter | Autofocus | Night vision with infrared lighting |
| 8MP v2 Camera Module | IMX219 8 MP | Fixed | Simple projects, lower profile |
| Raspberry Pi AI Camera | IMX500 12.3 MP with built-in AI | Manual | Object detection without an external accelerator |
For most projects, the standard Camera Module 3 is the right choice. Choose the wide-angle version to monitor a room or hallway, and the infrared version to film at night.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5, 4, 3 B+, 3 A+, Zero W and Zero 2 W, as well as Compute Module 4 and 5 (on a carrier board with a camera connector).
- Not compatible with Raspberry Pi 400, 500 and 500+, which have no camera connector, and with the 2016 Pi Zero.
- Raspberry Pi 5 and Zero : their connectors use the small 22-pin format, so you need a 22-to-15-pin ribbon cable (Standard-Mini); the included cable is not suitable.
- Software : use a recent Raspberry Pi OS with rpicam-apps or Picamera2. The old raspistill stack and Buster releases do not support this module.
- HDR limited to 3 MP : full resolution is used without HDR.
- Connection : turn off the Raspberry Pi, with the ribbon cable's metal contacts facing the board, without bending the cable.
Recommended accessories
- Raspberry Pi 5 8GB : its built-in image signal processor makes full use of the sensor.
- SanDisk High Endurance microSD card : designed for continuous video recording.
Uses and projects
- Time-lapse of construction sites, plants or starry skies.
- Surveillance of your home or pets, locally.
- Computer vision with OpenCV: QR code reading, counting, motion detection.
- Webcam for video conferencing or streaming.
Tutorials: make a time-lapse with the Raspberry Pi camera and build a pet monitoring system. To choose your board, see our Raspberry Pi 5 page or the Raspberry Pi 4 boards.
