Description
Raspberry Pi infrared Camera Module v3: 12 MP, autofocus and night vision
The Camera Module v3 Infrared is the NoIR version of the official Camera Module 3: the same 12-megapixel Sony IMX708 sensor, the same fast autofocus, but without an infrared filter. Combined with IR lighting, it films in total darkness, where a conventional camera sees nothing. It is available with a standard lens (75°) and a wide-angle lens (120°).
Highlights
- Night vision : without an IR filter, the sensor picks up infrared light from an IR illuminator that is invisible to the eye.
- Phase detection autofocus (PDAF) : fast focusing from 10 cm (standard) or 5 cm (wide angle).
- Back-illuminated stacked Sony IMX708 sensor, 11.9 effective MP, with HDR mode up to 3 MP.
- Smooth video : 1080p50, 720p100 and 480p120.
- Native support by libcamera and the Picamera2 Python library under Raspberry Pi OS.

Which one should you choose?
| Camera | Sensor | IR filter | Focus | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared Camera Module v3 (this product) | IMX708, 11.9 MP | No | Autofocus | Night surveillance, wildlife observation |
| Camera module v3 | IMX708, 11.9 MP | Yes | Autofocus | Daytime photo and video, true-to-life colors |
| Infrared Camera Module v2 | IMX219, 8 MP | No | Manually adjustable | Night vision, official Pi Zero case |
| Raspberry Pi AI Camera | IMX500, 12.3 MP | Yes | Manually adjustable | AI object detection on the sensor |
Our advice : for a camera active day and night with an IR illuminator, choose this version; for daytime shots only, the standard v3 gives accurate colors.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- Compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5, Pi 4, Pi 3, Pi 3 A+, Pi Zero W, Pi Zero 2 W and Compute Module 4 and 5 (via a carrier board with a camera connector).
- Pi 5 and Pi Zero : their camera connector uses the mini 22-pin format. You need the Standard-Mini camera cable, sold separately.
- Not compatible with the Pi 400, Pi 500 and Pi 500+ (no camera connector) and with the original 2016 Pi Zero.
- Daytime colors : without an IR filter, images taken in daylight have a pink or purple tint. This is normal for a NoIR camera.
- IR lighting not included : in complete darkness, the camera needs an infrared source (illuminator or infrared LEDs).
- Official Pi Zero case : its camera lid does not mechanically accept the Camera Module 3, which is taller than the v2.
What's in the box
The camera module and its 200 mm ribbon (15-pin to 15-pin) for the Pi 4 and earlier.
Recommended accessories
- The SanDisk High Endurance microSD card : designed for continuous video writing, it handles the load of a surveillance camera much better.
- The Raspberry Pi 5 8 GB : powerful enough to encode, detect motion and stream at the same time.
- The official 27 W USB-C power supply: a stable power supply prevents recording interruptions.
Uses and projects

Frequently asked questions
What does NoIR mean?
NoIR stands for "No InfraRed filter": the sensor has no infrared-cut filter, which makes it possible to film at night with IR lighting.
Can this camera see in the dark without lighting?
No. It captures infrared light, but an IR source (illuminator or IR LEDs) is needed to light the scene.
Why are my daytime images pink?
The absence of an IR filter mixes infrared with visible colors. For true-to-life daytime colors, choose the standard Camera Module v3.
Is it compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5?
Yes, with the Standard-Mini camera cable, as the Pi 5 uses a 22-pin mini connector.
Standard or wide-angle?
The standard (75°) suits a targeted scene; the wide angle (120°) covers an entire room or a garden from a corner.
Does autofocus work under Raspberry Pi OS?
Yes, it is supported by libcamera and by the Picamera2 library.
