Description

Official Raspberry Pi 4 USB-C power supply: the right power supply, with no compromise

L'official Raspberry Pi 15.3 W USB-C power supply (5.1 V, 3 A) is the one Raspberry Pi recommends for the Raspberry Pi 4 and the Raspberry Pi 400. It delivers exactly the voltage the board expects, with a fixed 1.5 m cable: no more rainbow screens, yellow undervoltage lightning bolts or random crashes caused by a phone charger.

Highlights

  • Designed for the Raspberry Pi 4 and the Pi 400 : 5.1 V and 3.0 A nominal, the value recommended by the manufacturer for these two models.
  • Voltage slightly raised to 5.1 V : it compensates for the voltage drop in the cable and keeps the board above the warning threshold.
  • 1.5 m captive cable in 18 AWG : thick gauge, no need to worry about overly thin third-party cables.
  • Built-in protection against short circuits, overcurrent and overheating.
  • European plug (type C), in white or black to match your case.

Compatibility: which board, which power supply?

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 400 : full compatibility, this is the reference power supply.
  • Raspberry Pi 5 : the board boots, but since it cannot negotiate 5 A, it limits the total current of the USB ports to 600 mA (instead of 1.6 A) and may display a warning. For a Pi 5, choose theOfficial 27 W USB-C power supply.
  • Raspberry Pi 3, 3 B+, 2 and Zero : these boards have a micro-USB input, not USB-C. The right choice is theofficial 12.5 W micro-USB power supply (5.1 V, 2.5 A), the one Raspberry Pi recommends for the Pi 1, 2 and 3.

Good to know: no Raspberry Pi supports USB-PPS mode, and a generic 3 A 5 V USB-C charger often delivers only 5.0 V, hence the undervoltage warnings.

What else you need

  • A board: the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4 GB is the most versatile version to get started.
  • A interrupteur d’alimentation USB-C : the Pi 4 has no on/off button, and the switch saves you from unplugging the cable.
  • The official Raspberry Pi 4 case, matching the power supply colors.

Uses and projects

A stable power supply is the key to a Raspberry Pi 4 that runs reliably 24/7: home server, media player, office workstation or home automation gateway. Frequently asked questions

Which power supply for a Raspberry Pi 4?

A 5.1 V, 3 A USB-C power supply, like this one. It is the official Raspberry Pi recommendation for the Pi 4 and the Pi 400.

Is this power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi 3?

No: the Raspberry Pi 3 (A+, B, B+) and the Pi 2 are powered via micro-USB. Choose the official micro-USB 12.5 W power supply (5.1 V, 2.5 A).

Can it be used with a Raspberry Pi 5?

Yes for light use, but the USB ports are then limited to 600 mA in total. For drives or an SSD, the 27 W power supply is essential.

Why 5.1 V and not 5 V?

The extra 0.1 V compensates for the loss in the cable: the board receives the correct voltage even under full load, with no undervoltage warning.
