Description

Raspberry Pi 5 2GB: the full Pi 5 architecture for focused projects

The Raspberry Pi 5 2GB features exactly the same board as the 4, 8 or 16 GB versions: Broadcom BCM2712 quad-core Cortex-A76 processor at 2.4 GHz, VideoCore VII GPU, dual 4Kp60 output, PCI Express and RP1 I/O chip. Only the amount of memory changes. For a light server, a robot, a connected camera or a learning station, 2 GB of LPDDR4X-4267 is more than enough, and you benefit from a processor two to three times faster than the Raspberry Pi 4's.

Highlights

  • Cortex-A76 CPU at 2.4 GHz with 512 KB of L2 cache per core and 2 MB of shared L3 cache.
  • VideoCore VII GPU at 800 MHz : OpenGL ES 3.1, Vulkan 1.2, 4Kp60 HEVC decoding.
  • Two 4Kp60 displays over micro-HDMI, with HDR support.
  • PCIe 2.0 x1 for an NVMe SSD via an M.2 HAT: boot and storage far faster than a microSD.
  • Two USB 3.0 ports usable simultaneously at 5 Gbit/s, plus two USB 2.0.
  • Power button and real-time clock built in (external battery optional).
  • Guaranteed production by Raspberry Pi until at least January 2036.

Which one to choose? Raspberry Pi 5 2GB, 8GB, 16GB or Raspberry Pi 500

Model Memory Recommended use
Raspberry Pi 5 2GB 2 GB Pi-hole, light Home Assistant, robotics, camera, learning
Raspberry Pi 5 8GB 8 GB Smooth desktop, Docker containers, media server
Raspberry Pi 5 16GB 16 GB Local AI, virtual machines, large datasets
Raspberry Pi 500 8 GB Same processor built into a keyboard, plug-and-play desktop computer

The processor is identical on all versions: memory makes the difference as soon as you open many tabs or run several services. For everyday office use, aim for at least 4 GB. Find the full range on our Raspberry Pi 5 page.

Compatibility and pitfalls

  • Power supply : a USB-C 5 V 5 A source is recommended. With a 3 A power supply, the total current of the USB ports is limited to 600 mA.
  • Cooling : under sustained load, add an active cooler or a ventilated case, never both on the same fan connector.
  • Cameras and displays : the Pi 5 connectors use the small 22-pin format. A camera with a 15-pin ribbon requires an adapter cable.
  • Pi 4 accessories : Pi 4 cases and PoE HATs are not compatible (ports and PoE header relocated).
  • PCIe : the connector is an FFC ribbon; an NVMe SSD is mounted via an M.2 HAT or an equivalent board.
  • Bare board : the Pi 5 is supplied without a case or accessories.

Recommended accessories

Uses and projects

  • Network ad blocker such as Pi-hole or AdGuard Home: 2 GB is very comfortable.
  • Home automation : a reasonably sized Home Assistant installation.
  • Vision and robotics : official camera, sensors on the GPIO and motors.
  • Beginner station : Python programming and electronics.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Raspberry Pi 5 2GB slower than the 8GB?

No, the processor and GPU are identical. The difference only appears when applications need more than 2 GB of memory.

Does the Raspberry Pi 5 have a GPU?

Yes, an 800 MHz VideoCore VII compatible with OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, capable of driving two 4Kp60 displays.

What ports does the Raspberry Pi 5 offer?

2 micro-HDMI, 2 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, USB-C power, 40-pin GPIO, 2 MIPI camera or display connectors, PCIe, microSD, fan, RTC battery and UART.

Can it boot from an SSD?

Yes, from an NVMe SSD via an M.2 HAT or from a USB 3.0 SSD, after setting the boot order.

Which power supply should I choose?

The official 27 W USB-C power supply, which delivers 5 V 5 A and can power demanding USB peripherals.

Is the Raspberry Pi 5 2GB enough for office work?

For text and a few tabs, yes, but 4 GB or more offers far greater comfort.
