Description
Banana Pi M4 Zero (BPI-M4 Zero): the 64-bit successor to the M2 Zero, with eMMC and 5 GHz Wi-Fi
The Banana Pi BPI-M4 Zero keeps the 65 x 30 mm form factor and 40-pin header of the Raspberry Pi Zero W, but moves up a class: quad-core 64-bit Cortex-A53 Allwinner H618 processor, 2 GB of LPDDR4, 8 GB of eMMC, 2.4 / 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and a mini-HDMI 2.0a output up to 4K at 60 Hz. Banana Pi presents it as the successor to the M2 Zero, with a 25% higher processor frequency and four times more memory.
Highlights
- 64-bit and 2 GB of LPDDR4 in a Zero form factor: enough to run modern services.
- 8 GB of eMMC in addition to the microSD card reader.
- Dual-band 2.4 / 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2.
- Mini-HDMI 2.0a up to 4K at 60 Hz with HDR10.
- Two USB-C ports : one OTG (power) and one host.
- 24-pin FPC connector providing access to USB 2.0, infrared and 100 Mbit/s Ethernet via an expansion board.

The M4 Zero is the most powerful of the Zero form factor boards in this selection. If you need USB-A ports and Gigabit Ethernet, the M4 Berry offers the same platform in the 85 x 56 mm form factor. To stay with Raspberry Pi OS, the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W is the reference option.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- No RJ45 jack on the board: 100 Mbit/s Ethernet goes through the FPC connector and an expansion board.
- USB-C connectors rather than micro-USB: Banana Pi states that the board fits most Zero W cases, but check that the openings allow USB-C plugs through.
- USB-C to USB-A adapter required to connect a standard keyboard or USB flash drive to the host port.
- Operating systems : Banana Pi provides Android, Ubuntu and Debian images. Raspberry Pi OS does not run natively.
- Raspberry Pi HATs : identical pinout, but drivers specific to Raspberry Pi OS are not guaranteed.
Recommended accessories
- L'Raspberry Pi 15.3 W USB-C power supply : 5.1 V / 3 A, exactly what the board needs.
- The mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to connect the board to a 4K display.
- A SanDisk Ultra microSD card to flash an image or store data.
Uses and projects
- Pocket media player in 4K behind a TV.
- IoT gateway 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in a very small footprint.
- Lightweight server : ad blocker, VPN, monitoring.
- Robotics and embedded devices where space is limited.
