Description

SFP 2.5G RJ45 module for BPI-R3 (BPI-SFP-2.5G-T-R-RM) for Banana Pi

The BPI-SFP-2.5G-T-R-RM converts an SFP cage of the Banana Pi BPI-R3 into a 2.5 Gbit/s copper RJ45 port. Both SFP cages of the R3 run in fixed 2500Base-X mode: only modules compatible with this protocol work in them, and this one is among the modules Banana Pi has tested successfully. You can therefore connect an ordinary network cable to a router, a switch or a 2.5G NAS.

Highlights

  • 2.5 Gbit/s over copper cable, with no fiber or optical patch cord.
  • Tested by Banana Pi on the official list of modules for the BPI-R3.
  • Ideal for WAN to take advantage of a multi-gigabit fiber plan behind an ISP box with a 2.5G port.
  • Simple cabling : a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable is enough over short distances.

Technical specifications

Element BPI-SFP-2.5G-T-R-RM
Format SFP
Connector Copper RJ45
Throughput 2.5 Gbit/s
Cage-side protocol 2500Base-X
Tested board Banana Pi BPI-R3

Which one should you choose?

Module Support Throughput Card
BPI-SFP-2.5G-T-R-RM Copper RJ45 cable 2.5 Gbit/s BPI-R3
BPI-SFP-2.5G-BX Singlemode fibre, one strand 2.5 Gbit/s BPI-R3
SFP-10G-T Copper RJ45 cable 10 Gbit/s BPI-R4, R4 Pro

Stay with copper for a link within the same room; switch to 2.5G BiDi fiber for long distances.

Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid

  • For the BPI-R3 : the BPI-R4 cages are fixed at 10 Gbit/s and do not accept this module.
  • No insertion notification : the R3 does not report the insertion of an SFP module. Check the link status in OpenWrt once the cable is connected.
  • Equipment on the other end : make sure your router or switch accepts 2.5 Gbit/s on that port.
  • The BPI-R3 Mini has no SFP cage : it already has two 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi : no model has an SFP cage, so this module cannot connect to it.

Recommended accessories

  • Banana Pi BPI-R3 : the router board with two 2.5G SFP cages for which this module is intended.
  • Metal case for BPI-R3 : protects the board and its modules.
  • RJ45 CAT6 Ethernet cable: to connect the module to the router or switch.

Uses and projects

  • 2.5G WAN port to your ISP's fiber box.
  • 2.5G link to a NAS or a workstation.

Frequently asked questions

Does this module work on the BPI-R3?

Yes, it is on the list of SFP modules tested by Banana Pi for the R3.

And on the BPI-R4?

No, the R4 only accepts 10G modules. Choose the SFP-10G-T.

Is there an SFP port on Raspberry Pi?

No. For open-source SFP, you need a router such as the BPI-R3 or the BPI-R4.

Why does nothing appear when I plug in the module?

The R3 does not detect the insertion of SFP modules; this is normal. Check the link in the network interface.

See the Banana Pi range; on monraspberry.com, this module is an official, tested product, with returns within 14 days with return authorization, free pickup point delivery on orders from €200 and payment by Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
