The BPI-R3 SFP modules (ref. BPI-SFP-2.5G-BX) create a 2.5 Gbit/s fibre link between two devices, over a single strand of singlemode fibre, up to approximately 10 km. They are designed for the two SFP cages of the Banana Pi BPI-R3, which operate in 2500Base-X: Banana Pi has validated 2.5G BiDi U and D optical modules on this board. Sold as a set of two, this product lets you build a complete link.

Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- One U facing one D : a BiDi link always pairs one module of each type, one at each end.
- BPI-R3 only : the cages of the BPI-R4 and R4 Pro are fixed at 10 Gbit/s.
- No insertion notification on the R3: check the link in OpenWrt.
- Not for consumer fibre : operators' FTTH connections use PON technology and their own box.
- Singlemode fibre required, and never look into an active module (laser).
