Description

Banana Pi BPI-R4: 10 Gbit/s open source router ready for Wi-Fi 7

The Banana Pi BPI-R4 is Banana Pi's high-end router board. Its MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880) SoC with four Cortex-A73 cores drives two 10 Gbit/s SFP+ cages, four Gigabit ports, an M.2 slot for 4G/5G, a second one for an NVMe SSD and two mini PCIe slots for a Wi-Fi 7 card. With 4 GB of DDR4 and 8 GB of eMMC, it is the ideal platform for a 10G fiber OpenWrt router, an enterprise firewall or a network lab.

Highlights

  • Two 10 GbE SFP+ : fiber uplink and 10G link to the local network.
  • Four Cortex-A73 cores at 1.8 GHz and MediaTek TOPS engine to offload tunnel processing.
  • Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 (2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz) by adding the BPI-R4-NIC-BE14 card.
  • M.2 B-key (USB 3.2 / PCIe 3.0) for a 4G/5G modem and M.2 M key (PCIe 3.0 x1) for an NVMe SSD.
  • 8 GB eMMC, 128 MB SPI NAND and microSD for a robust, recoverable system.

Which one should you choose?

Model SoC Fast ports Wi-Fi Who is it for?
BPI-R4 MT7988A, 4 x A73 2 x 10G SFP+ + 4 x 1G Wi-Fi 7 via module 10G fiber, SMBs, lab
BPI-R3 MT7986, 4 x A53 2 x 2.5G SFP + 5 x 1G Built-in 4×4 Wi-Fi 6 All-in-one 2.5G router
BPI-R4 Pro MT7988A Extended version of the R4 Wi-Fi 7 via module Higher networking needs
Banana Pi OpenWrt One MT7981B, 2 x A53 1 x 2.5G + 1 x 1G Built-in Wi-Fi 6 Getting started with OpenWrt

Choose the BPI-R4 if your connection exceeds 2.5 Gbit/s or if you want a 10G network core. The BPI-R3 remains simpler if you want built-in Wi-Fi without adding a module.

Compatibility and pitfalls

  • No built-in Wi-Fi : a mini PCIe card is required for wireless.
  • SFP cages fixed at 10 Gbit/s : the 2.5G SFP modules designed for the BPI-R3 do not work.
  • SFP-10G-T copper module : it runs very hot (up to 90 °C) and must not be hot-swapped; reboot after changing it.
  • Power supply : 12 V / 5.2 A or 19 V / 3.2 A. Banana Pi states that a 12 V / 2 A adapter is only sufficient without peripherals (under 10 W).
  • PoE : not supported on the standard version (hardware modification required).
  • 26-pin GPIO, no video output: administration via the network or the serial port.

Recommended accessories

Uses and projects

  • 10G fiber router running OpenWrt.
  • Enterprise firewall and VPN with multiple VLANs.
  • Backup 4G/5G router thanks to the M.2 B-key slot.
  • Wi-Fi 7 access point with the dedicated NIC card.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BPI-R4 have Wi-Fi?

Not natively. Add the BPI-R4-NIC-BE14 card to the mini PCIe slots for tri-band Wi-Fi 7.

Which power supply for the BPI-R4?

12 V / 5.2 A or 19 V / 3.2 A via DC jack. A 12 V / 2 A supply is only suitable without peripherals.

Do BPI-R3 SFP modules work?

No, the R4's cages are fixed at 10 Gbit/s: use 10G modules.

Can I fit an SSD and a 5G modem?

Yes: the M.2 M-key slot takes an NVMe SSD and the M.2 B-key slot a 4G/5G modem.

Does the BPI-R4 run OpenWrt?

Yes, Banana Pi publishes an OpenWrt BSP and the board is supported by the community.

Is PoE possible?

Not on the standard version of the BPI-R4.
