Description
Raspberry Pi 5 8GB: the most versatile RPi5 board
The Raspberry Pi 5 8 GB is the most balanced model in the RPi5 range: enough memory for a Linux workstation, Docker containers or a home server, with a processor two to three times faster than the Raspberry Pi 4. This listing is for the board only, to be completed with a power supply, cooling and a microSD card.
Highlights
- Cortex-A76 processor at 2.4 GHz : 2 to 3 times the CPU performance of the Raspberry Pi 4 according to Raspberry Pi.
- 8 GB LPDDR4X-4267 for multitasking, Docker, Home Assistant or office work.
- PCIe 2.0 x1 port : boot and storage on an NVMe SSD with an M.2 HAT.
- Dual 4Kp60 display with HDR support.
- Power button and real-time clock built in, a first on a Raspberry Pi.
- Guaranteed production until at least January 2036.
Technical specifications

Compatibility: pitfalls to avoid
- Pi 4 accessories : Raspberry Pi 4 cases and PoE HATs are not compatible with the Pi 5.
- Cameras and displays with 15-pin ribbon cables : you need a standard-to-mini adapter cable, as the Pi 5 uses 22-pin connectors.
- Power supply : with a generic 3 A USB-C power adapter, the Pi 5 limits the current supplied to its USB ports. The official 27 W adapter negotiates 5 A and raises this limit from 600 mA to 1.6 A.
- NVMe storage : the PCIe port is an FFC ribbon connector, so an M.2 HAT or a suitably equipped case is required.
What else you need
- L'Official 27 W USB-C power supply, essential for power-hungry USB peripherals or an SSD.
- Cooling: the official heatsink fan (Active Cooler) or the official Raspberry Pi 5 case, which already includes a fan.
- A official micro-HDMI to HDMI cable per screen.
- A quality microSD card (class A1 or A2) for the operating system.
- To boot from SSD: the HAT+ M.2 for Raspberry Pi 5.
- Prefer to receive everything at once? The Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit brings together the board and its official accessories.
Uses and projects
- Silent Linux desktop computer, dual screen.
- Home server: Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Docker, ad blocker.
- Home automation with Home Assistant, edge AI with a dedicated HAT.

Frequently asked questions
RPi5: 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB?
The 8 GB is the best compromise for office work, Docker and home servers. The 16 GB is only justified for very memory-intensive uses, such as local AI.
Does the Raspberry Pi 5 8 GB come with a power supply?
No, this is the board only. Plan for the official USB-C 27 W power supply, cooling and a microSD card.
Is a fan absolutely necessary?
It is strongly recommended: without cooling, the processor lowers its frequency under sustained load. The Active Cooler or the official fan-cooled case is sufficient.
Can it boot from an NVMe SSD?
Yes, via the PCIe 2.0 x1 port and an M.2 HAT or an NVMe-compatible case.
What is the difference from the Raspberry Pi 4?
A CPU 2 to 3 times faster, a more powerful GPU, a PCIe port, a power button, a real-time clock and double the USB bandwidth.
