Description

The Total Phase Beagle USB 12 Protocol Analyzer (ref. TP320221) is a non-intrusive USB protocol analyzer for Full Speed and Low Speedlinks. It shows what happens on the USB bus as it happens, with 21 ns resolution and real-time USB descriptor decoding.

It sits between the host and the device under study, and a third port connects it to your analysis computer. Captured data is streamed continuously to the computer over high-speed USB, allowing captures of nearly unlimited duration, with traces of more than 25 GB.

This analyzer suits devices running up to 12 Mbit/s. It does not follow High Speed or SuperSpeed traffic: for those rates, Total Phase offers the Beagle USB 480 and Beagle USB 5000 v2.

Highlights

  • Non-intrusive: monitoring of USB Full Speed (12 Mbit/s) and Low Speed (1.5 Mbit/s).
  • Real time: live display of USB packets and USB-specific error codes.
  • Decoding: USB descriptors decoded by the Data Center software.
  • Large captures: traces of more than 25 GB, streamed continuously to the computer.
  • Practical: powered by the USB 2.0 bus, no AC adapter needed.
  • Free software and API.

Why a hardware analyzer? A software capture on the host, with usbmon or Wireshark, shows transfers as seen by the host's USB stack. The analyzer placed between the host and the device sees packets as they pass on the bus, without going through the driver you may be trying to investigate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I analyze a USB 2.0 High Speed device?

No, this analyzer only covers Full Speed and Low Speed. For High Speed at 480 Mbit/s, you need the Beagle USB 480.

Is an external power supply required?

No, the analyzer is powered by the USB bus.

Is the software paid?

No, Total Phase states that the software and API are free, to download from its website.

Can I install the software on a Raspberry Pi?

Total Phase specifies a computer with an Intel or AMD processor as the minimum configuration and does not list the Raspberry Pi among supported systems. So plan on a PC or Mac as your analysis computer.
