Description

Raspberry Pi CM4 (Compute Module 4): the power of the Pi 4 to integrate

The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, or CM4, takes the processor of the Raspberry Pi 4 into a 55 x 40 mm module designed to be integrated into a product. It has no standard ports: it plugs via its two high-density connectors into a carrier board, which provides the connectors your application needs. You choose the amount of memory, the eMMC capacity and whether Wi-Fi is included according to your project.

Highlights

  • BCM2711 processor four 64-bit Cortex-A72 cores at 1.5 GHz.
  • Configurable : 1, 2, 4 or 8 GB of LPDDR4, eMMC from 8 to 32 GB or Lite version without eMMC, optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • PCIe Gen 2 x1 exposed: NVMe, networking, USB 3.0 depending on the carrier board.
  • Dual HDMI up to 4Kp60, two camera interfaces and two MIPI display interfaces.
  • Gigabit Ethernet with IEEE 1588-compatible PHY.
  • Modular radio certification for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which reduces compliance testing for your product.
  • Assured production until at least January 2034.

Which one to choose? CM4, CM4S or CM5

Module Processor Memory Format For whom
Compute Module 4 Cortex-A72 1.5 GHz 1 to 8 GB 55 x 40 mm, 2 high-density connectors New products based on Pi 4, PCIe and Ethernet required
Compute Module 4S Cortex-A72 1.5 GHz 1 GB (version sold here), 8 GB eMMC 67.6 x 31 mm, SODIMM type Upgrading products designed for the CM3 form factor
Compute Module 5 Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz 2 to 16 GB 55 x 40 mm More power, native USB 3.0

To choose the CM4 variant: pick an eMMC version for a robust, reproducible product, or a Lite version if you prefer the microSD card of your carrier board or booting from NVMe. Wi-Fi is only useful if your enclosure lets radio waves through or accepts an external antenna.

Compatibility and pitfalls

  • Carrier board required : without one, the CM4 offers no usable ports.
  • Lite version : the system is stored on the carrier board's microSD (or an NVMe).
  • eMMC version : the eMMC is programmed via the carrier board's USB port with rpiboot.
  • USB : a single USB 2.0 interface on the module side, disabled by default to save power.
  • Not CM3 compatible : the pinout has nothing in common with the old SODIMM form factor; for that form factor, see the CM4S.
  • Antenna : in a metal enclosure, use the external antenna.

Recommended accessories

Uses and projects

  • Industrial product : gateway, PLC, terminal, digital signage.
  • Console portable : the Recalbox and GPi Case 2 kit with CM4 is one example.
  • Router or firewall on a dual Ethernet carrier board.
  • Vision with one or two MIPI cameras.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Raspberry Pi CM4?

A compute module that takes the processor of the Raspberry Pi 4 into a 55 x 40 mm form factor, designed to be mounted on a carrier board inside a product.

What is the difference between CM4 and CM4 Lite?

The Lite version has no eMMC: the system boots from the carrier board's microSD card or from an NVMe SSD.

Does the CM4 have Wi-Fi?

As an option: choose the variant with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 if needed.

Can the CM4 boot from NVMe?

Yes, via the carrier board's PCIe. A CM4 Lite automatically boots from NVMe if the microSD reader is empty.

Does the CM4 replace a CM3?

Not directly: the form factor is different. The CM4S uses the CM3 form factor.

What temperature range does it support?

From -20 to +85 °C for the standard versions.
