Description
Raspberry Pi CM4S: the Compute Module 4 in SODIMM form factor (1 GB, 8 GB eMMC)
The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4S (CM4S) brings the processor of the Raspberry Pi 4 to the 200-pin SODIMM form factor of the Compute Module 3 and 3+. It is aimed at manufacturers who want to upgrade a product designed around the CM3 or CM3+ without redesigning their board: more power, an eMMC four times faster and production support until at least 2034. This model combines 1 GB of RAM with 8 GB of eMMC.
Highlights
- BCM2711 : four 64-bit Cortex-A72 cores at 1.5 GHz.
- SODIMM form factor mechanically compatible with the CM3 and CM3+.
- 8 GB eMMC up to 100 MB/s peak.
- 46 GPIO at 1.8 V or 3.3 V: up to 6 UART, 6 I2C and 6 SPI.
- HDMI 2.0 up to 4Kp60, two DSI and two CSI-2 interfaces.
- Production until at least January 2034.

Which one should you choose?
| Module | Format | Processor | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CM4S (this product) | 200-pin SODIMM | BCM2711 1.5 GHz | migration of a CM3 or CM3+ product |
| Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 | two 100-pin connectors | BCM2711 1.5 GHz | new design: PCIe, Ethernet, dual HDMI, optional Wi-Fi |
| Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 | two 100-pin connectors | BCM2712 2.4 GHz | new high-performance design |
Looking for a CM4? The CM4S is not a CM4: same processor, but different form factor and pinout. For a new board, Raspberry Pi recommends the CM4; the CM4S is aimed at existing products in the SODIMM form factor.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- SODIMM carrier board required : the CM4S does not plug into CM4 or CM5 boards.
- Not a memory module : its pinout differs from a DDR2 SODIMM module, and the two are not electrically compatible.
- Power supplies : VBAT and 3.3 V are required; the 1.8 V of older modules is no longer used but may still be supplied.
- USB disabled by default by the firmware to save power: enable it in config.txt.
- No wireless : provide Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the carrier board.
Recommended accessories
- Raspberry Pi Flash Drive: USB 3.0 drive for transferring images and logs during development.
- USB 3.0 SD/TF card reader: handy for preparing system images on a workstation.
Uses and projects
- Upgrading a CM3 product : more power without a mechanical redesign.
- Industrial product : using a Raspberry Pi in a commercial product.
- Automation and monitoring : Raspberry Pi in industry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CM4 and CM4S?
Same BCM2711 processor, but the CM4 uses two 100-pin connectors and adds PCIe, Ethernet, dual HDMI and optional wireless. The CM4S uses the SODIMM form factor of the CM3.
Is the CM4S a direct replacement for a CM3+?
It is designed for migration from the CM3 and CM3+, in the same form factor. Check the power supplies and USB activation on your carrier board.
Does the CM4S have Wi-Fi?
No, no version of the CM4S includes Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
What is the storage capacity?
This model has 8 GB of eMMC and 1 GB of RAM.
How do I program the eMMC?
Via the carrier board's USB port in device mode, with Raspberry Pi's rpiboot tool.
Until when will it be produced?
Raspberry Pi announces production until at least January 2034.
Which operating systems can be used?
The CM4S runs Raspberry Pi OS like a Raspberry Pi 4; the additional GPIO and video interfaces are configured in config.txt according to your carrier board.
