Description
Raspberry CM5: the power of the Raspberry Pi 5 in Compute Module format
The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5) packs the heart of the Raspberry Pi 5 into a 55 × 40 mm module designed to be mounted on a carrier board. Processor Broadcom BCM2712 quad-core Cortex-A76 at 2.4 GHz, 2 to 16 GB of RAM, 0 to 64 GB eMMC and optional Wi-Fi: you choose the exact configuration of your product, from prototype to industrial production.
Highlights
- Pi 5 performance : same Cortex-A76 processor at 2.4 GHz and same Raspberry Pi OS software stack.
- Configuration to order : 2, 4, 8 or 16 GB RAM, 16, 32 or 64 GB eMMC storage or Lite version without eMMC, with or without Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- LPDDR4 RAM with ECC : memory error correction, an asset for systems that run continuously.
- More interfaces than the Pi 5 : PCIe 2.0 x1, two USB 3.0, two HDMI 2.0, two 4-lane MIPI, up to 30 GPIO.
- Industrial range : operation from -20 °C to +85 °C and production guaranteed until at least January 2036.
- Same form factor as the CM4 : two high-density 100-pin connectors, making it easier to migrate an existing design.

Which one should you choose?
| Module | Processor | RAM / eMMC | USB | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CM5 (this product) | Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz | 2 to 16 GB / 0 to 64 GB | 2 × USB 3.0 + USB 2.0 | new products, AI, 4K display |
| Compute Module 4 | Cortex-A72 1.5 GHz | 1 to 8 GB / 0 to 64 GB | USB 2.0 | existing CM4 designs, many carrier boards |
| Compute Module 4S | Cortex-A72 | 1 GB / 8 GB | USB 2.0 | CM3 replacement in SODIMM format |
For a new project, the CM5 is the logical choice. The CM4 remains relevant if your carrier board or software has already been validated on it.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Carrier board required : the module has no ports usable on their own. The official CM5 IO Board provides HDMI, USB, PoE Ethernet, M.2 and GPIO.
- CM4 carrier boards : the CM5 fits them, but with reduced features according to Raspberry Pi. Check each interface before migrating.
- Lite version : without eMMC, the system boots from a microSD card or other media provided by the carrier board.
- Cooling : a suitable heatsink is recommended under sustained load.
- Wi-Fi in a metal enclosure : choose the wireless version and add an external antenna.
Recommended accessories
- Official Raspberry Pi antenna kit : 2.4 and 5 GHz antenna compatible with CM4 and CM5, to connect to the module's U.FL connector.
- USB-C 27 W power supply : the CM5 IO Board is powered like a Pi 5, with 5 V 5 A USB-C.
- Compute Module accessories : carrier boards, cases and heatsinks.
Uses and projects
- Industrial products : HMIs, IoT gateways, machine controllers.
- Display and signage : dual 4K in a custom enclosure.
- Edge AI and clusters : multiple modules on a backplane board.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the CM5 and the Raspberry Pi 5?
Same processor, but the CM5 is a module without connectors: it mounts on a carrier board and offers more interfaces, eMMC and a wider temperature range.
Is the CM5 available with 16 GB of RAM?
Yes, the CM5 comes in 2, 4, 8 and 16 GB of LPDDR4 RAM with ECC.
Which version should I choose: with or without Wi-Fi?
Choose the wireless version if the device needs to connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; the version without radio simplifies certain certifications.
What does CM5 Lite mean?
It is the version without eMMC (0 GB): the system boots from a microSD card or other storage provided by the carrier board.
Is the CM5 compatible with CM4 boards?
It shares the same form factor and mounts on CM4 boards, with reduced features depending on the board.
How long will it be produced?
Raspberry Pi guarantees its production until at least January 2036.
