Description
GPi Case 2 + Dock: the retro handheld console for Raspberry Pi CM4, also playable on the TV
The Retroflag GPi Case 2 turns a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 into a Game Boy-inspired handheld console: 3-inch screen, 4000 mAh battery, D-pad, A, B, X, Y buttons, hidden L and R triggers, speaker and headphone jack. Placed on its dock, it charges and displays the game on the TV over HDMI, with two USB ports for wired controllers. A single machine for gaming on the go and in the living room.
Highlights
- Two play modes : handheld, or living room console on the dock with 720p or 1080p HDMI output.
- 4000 mAh lithium battery, USB-C 5 V / 3 A charging, play possible while charging or on a power bank.
- Tool-free assembly : the CM4 clicks into place on four guide points.
- Turbo and Home buttons, power saving mode, backlight wheel and volume control.
- Recalbox recommended : no display patch or shutdown script to install.
- Dock with two USB 2.0 ports for controllers, keyboard or mouse.

Which one should you choose?
| Product | Card | Battery | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPi Case 2 + Dock | Raspberry Pi CM4 | 4000 mAh | HDMI dock for the TV |
| GPi Case 2W | Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero W, Zero 2 W | 2800 mAh | 3-inch IPS screen, more affordable |
| Recalbox and GPi Case 2 kit with CM4 | CM4 included | 4000 mAh | Complete ready-to-play solution |
| PiStation Case | Raspberry Pi 4 | No | Living room console |
The GPi Case 2 harnesses the power of the CM4, well above that of a Pi Zero 2 W, to emulate more consoles. If you do not want to assemble anything, the kit with CM4 and Recalbox is the simplest route.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Compute Module 4 required and not included: a standard Raspberry Pi 4 does not fit.
- CM4 with eMMC : the microSD reader is then no longer used for the system; Retroflag recommends the CM4 Lite with Wi-Fi.
- Compute Module 5 : Retroflag only documents the CM4; we do not guarantee the CM5.
- RetroPie : display patch and clean shutdown scripts required, unlike Recalbox.
- Charger : plan for a USB-C 5 V / 3 A power supply.
Recommended accessories
- The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, ideally the Lite version with Wi-Fi.
- L'official Raspberry Pi 15.3 W USB-C power supply : 5.1 V / 3 A, the current required by the case and the dock.
- A carte microSD SanDisk Ultra to install Recalbox on a CM4 Lite.

Frequently asked questions
Is the GPi Case 2 compatible with the CM5?
Retroflag only documents Compute Module 4 boards. The CM5 is not guaranteed.
Which CM4 should I choose for the GPi Case 2?
Retroflag recommends a CM4 Lite with Wi-Fi: the system is installed on the microSD and Wi-Fi is used for updates and transferring games.
Which operating system should I install?
Recalbox is recommended: it works without any patch or script. RetroPie requires a display patch and shutdown scripts.
How do I play on the TV?
By placing the console on the dock, connected to the TV over HDMI (720p or 1080p).
Can I play while charging?
Yes, and the console also works with a power bank.
What is the difference with the GPi Case 2W?
The 2W takes a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W with a 2800 mAh battery; the GPi Case 2 takes a more powerful CM4, with 4000 mAh and an HDMI dock.
