Retroflag GPi Case 2W: the Game Boy-style handheld console for Raspberry Pi Zero

Retroflag's GPi Case 2W turns a Raspberry Pi Zero into a pocket retro console, in a case inspired by the Game Boy. 3-inch IPS screen, 2800 mAh rechargeable battery, speaker and a full set of buttons: slide in the board, insert a Recalbox microSD card and play anywhere, with no soldering thanks to the pogo pins.

Compatibility: which Raspberry Pi Zero should you choose?

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W: the best choice. Recalbox offers a dedicated GPi Case 2W + Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W image in version 10.1.1, and its quad-core processor is much more comfortable than that of the first-generation Zero boards.
Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi Zero W : compatible, but the dedicated Recalbox image remains at version 9.2.3.
Not compatible: Zero WH and Zero 2 WH, whose soldered GPIO header prevents the pogo pins from making contact.
RetroPie : possible, but you need to install the display patch and the clean shutdown scripts provided by Retroflag.

What else you need

A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W or Zero W board without a soldered header.
A SanDisk Ultra microSD card for Recalbox and your games.
A USB 3.0 SD card reader to flash Recalbox from your computer.
A standard 5 V USB charger, to connect to the supplied USB to DC cable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the GPi Case, GPi Case 2 and GPi Case 2W?

The original GPi Case has a 2.8-inch 320 x 240 screen and runs on AA batteries. The GPi Case 2W moves to a 3-inch 640 x 480 IPS screen and a 2800 mAh battery, for Raspberry Pi Zero. The GPi Case 2, for its part, takes a Compute Module 4.

Does the GPi Case 2W work with a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 WH?

No. Versions with a soldered GPIO header (WH) are not compatible with the case's pogo pins.

Do you need to install scripts?

Not with Recalbox, recommended by Retroflag: the display and clean shutdown work out of the box. With RetroPie, the display patch and shutdown scripts are required.

How do you charge it?

With the supplied USB to DC cable, connected to a 5 V USB charger.

Is the Raspberry Pi included?

No, the case is sold on its own. Add a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W or Zero W and a microSD card.
