Description
Flirc Raspberry Pi Zero case: the aluminium that cools your Zero
The Flirc case for Raspberry Pi Zero follows the recipe of the famous Flirc case in a miniature version: a body made of aluminium that itself acts as a heatsink, ABS shells, two interchangeable lids and a lanyard to take it anywhere. It accommodates every Raspberry Pi Zero model, including the Zero 2 W, and turns the bare board into a sturdy little computer you can slip into a bag without worry.
Highlights
- Heatsink built into the metal : the supplied thermal pad connects the processor to the aluminium case, removing heat with no fan and no noise.
- Two lids supplied : a closed lid to protect the board and an open lid that gives access to the GPIO pins.
- Enclosed microSD card : it cannot slip out or be removed by mistake, a real plus for a portable device or one installed in a public place.
- Lanyard included : Flirc supplies it so you can attach the case to a key ring or a bag.
- Assembly in a few minutes : the screws are supplied in the accessory bag.

Which one should you choose?
There are three approaches to housing a Raspberry Pi Zero. The Flirc focuses on metal and heat dissipation, the official case on simplicity, the Argon POD on connectivity.
| Model | Material | Cooling | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flirc Zero case | aluminum and ABS | passive through the metal | sturdy, portable, ideal for pushing the Zero 2 W |
| official Raspberry Pi Zero case | plastic | no heatsink | light and simple |
| Argon POD | aluminium and ABS cover | passive | full-size HDMI and additional USB 2.0 ports |
| Pibow Zero 2 W | acrylic layers | no heatsink | colourful look and access to the connectors |
Our advice: choose the Flirc if your Zero runs continuously (server, sensor, ad blocker) or travels often; go for the Argon POD if you need a real HDMI port and standard USB ports without adapters.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- microSD card : it is deliberately enclosed. Prepare and test your system before final assembly, as the case must be reopened to change the card.
- GPIO : to connect wires or a small HAT, use the open lid. Zero boards sold without a header must first be fitted with a 40-pin header.
- Thermal pad on the Zero 2 W : some users find it slightly thick; check that the lid closes without forcing and that the board stays flat.
- Connections : the Zero keeps its mini-HDMI and micro-USB ports; plan for suitable adapters for a screen, keyboard or USB flash drive.
- No Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 : this case is dedicated to the 65 × 30 mm Zero form factor.
Recommended accessories
- The Raspberry Pi Zero W : with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it fits straight into the case.
- The official 12.5 W micro-USB power supply : it provides the 5 V and 2.5 A recommended for a stable Zero.
- The HDMI and USB adapter kit for Zero : essential for the initial setup with a screen and keyboard.
- The GPIO Hammer Header: adds the 40 pins without soldering on a Zero that lacks them.
- A SanDisk Ultra microSD card: a reliable card, important since it will stay enclosed.
Uses and projects
- Network ad blocker that runs silently, based on our Pi-hole on Raspberry Pi guide.
- Pocket mini computer for troubleshooting, network scripts or learning Linux on the go.
- Connected sensor or probe wired to the GPIO with the open lid.
- Small home server : VPN, monitoring or light automation, in silence.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Flirc case compatible with the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W?
Yes. Flirc states that it works with all Raspberry Pi Zero models, including the Zero 2 W, which particularly benefits from its aluminium heatsink.
Can I access the GPIO with the case closed?
Yes, with the second lid supplied: it leaves the GPIO pins accessible. The solid lid protects the board when you do not need them.
How do I remove the microSD card?
The case has to be disassembled. Flirc chose this to prevent the card from falling out or being stolen.
Do I need a fan?
No. The aluminium body acts as a heatsink thanks to the supplied thermal pad, which is enough for continuous use of the Zero.
Can I see the Raspberry Pi LEDs?
No, Flirc specifies that the board LEDs are not visible once the case is closed.
Which power supply should I use?
A 5 V micro-USB power supply able to deliver 2.5 A, such as the official 12.5 W power supply, for stable operation of the Zero 2 W and its peripherals.
