Description
Official 12.5 W micro-USB Raspberry Pi power supply: the right unit for Pi 3 and Pi Zero
Without a good micro-USB Raspberry Pi power supply, an underpowered Raspberry Pi crashes, corrupts its microSD card or throttles its processor without warning. This official micro-USB Raspberry Pi power supply delivers 5.1 V at 2.5 A (12.5 W) with a built-in 1.5 m micro-USB cable: it is the manufacturer's recommended unit for all micro-USB powered Raspberry Pi boards, from the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ to the Raspberry Pi Zero W.
Highlights
- Voltage calibrated at 5.1 V : the slight surplus compensates for the voltage drop in the cable, whereas a phone charger at barely 5 V triggers undervoltage warnings.
- 2.5 A rated, the recommended current for a loaded Raspberry Pi 3 with its USB peripherals.
- 1.5 m captive cable in 18 AWG : a thick gauge that limits losses, impossible to lose or mix up with a thin charging cable.
- Built-in protection against short circuits and overcurrent.
- No-load consumption of 0.075 W maximum and efficiency of at least 80.73%: ideal for a Pi running 24/7.

Which one should you choose?
The connector decides: micro-USB for generations up to the Pi 3 and for the Pi Zero boards, USB-C from the Pi 4 onward. Here are the official power supplies in the range:
| Power supply | Connector | Output | Cable | For which board |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro-USB 12.5 W (this product) | Micro-USB | 5.1 V / 2.5 A | 1.5 m, 18 AWG | Pi 3, Pi 3 A+, Pi 2, Pi Zero, Zero W, Zero 2 W |
| USB-C 15.3 W | USB-C | 5.1 V / 3 A | 1.5 m, 18 AWG | Pi 4, Pi 400 |
| USB-C 27 W | USB-C | 5.1 V / 5 A + USB PD profiles | 1.2 m, 17 AWG | Pi 5 with power-hungry USB peripherals |
| USB-C 45 W | USB-C | 5.1 V / 5 A + USB PD profiles up to 20 V | 1.5 m, 17 AWG | Pi 5 and USB PD devices |
Our advice : for a Pi 3 or a Pi Zero, choose this micro-USB unit. For a Raspberry Pi 4, move up to the 15.3 W USB-C; for a Raspberry Pi 5, the 27 W is the go-to choice.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- Compatible with all Raspberry Pi boards with a micro-USB input: Pi 3 Model B and B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, Pi 2 Model B, Pi Zero, Zero W and Zero 2 W.
- Not compatible with the Pi 4, Pi 400 and Pi 5, which have a USB-C input. A micro-USB to USB-C adapter does not solve anything: 2.5 A is still insufficient for these boards.
- On a Pi Zero, plug the unit into the port marked PWR IN, not the USB data port.
- USB hard drives : a 2.5-inch drive powered by the Pi can exceed the available budget; prefer a drive with its own power supply.
Recommended accessories
- The official Raspberry Pi 3 case: its openings let the micro-USB connector through without forcing.
- A SanDisk Ultra micro SD card: a stable power supply is useless if the storage medium is slow or fragile.
- The USB to micro-USB cable for connecting a peripheral, or a Pi Zero in gadget mode, to a computer; for the main power supply, stick with the official unit.
Uses and projects
Pi-hole server on a Pi 3, weather station on a Pi Zero W, home automation gateway or retro arcade cabinet: all projects that run continuously and require clean power. To estimate what your setup consumes, read our article on the power consumption of a Raspberry Pi.
Frequently asked questions
Is this power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi 4?
No. The Pi 4 is powered via USB-C and requires 3 A: use the official 15.3 W USB-C power supply.
Can I use a micro-USB phone charger?
It is possible but risky: many chargers deliver 5 V with a thin cable, leading to voltage drops and reboots. The official unit supplies 5.1 V with an 18 AWG cable.
Is the micro-USB cable detachable?
No, it is captive (built into the unit) and is 1.5 m long.
Is this the right power supply for a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W?
Yes, the Zero 2 W is powered via micro-USB and this unit easily covers its needs.
Does it work on the French mains supply?
Yes, it accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50/60 Hz.
What happens in the event of a short circuit?
The unit has built-in short circuit and overcurrent protection that cuts the output.
