Description
Raspberry Pi Pico 2: the faster, more secure RP2350 microcontroller
The Raspberry Pi Pico 2 is the second generation of Raspberry Pi's microcontroller board. It keeps the 21 × 51 mm form factor and pinout of the first Pico, but moves to the RP2350 : chip: two Arm Cortex-M33 cores or two RISC-V Hazard3 cores at 150 MHz, 520 KB of SRAM, 4 MB of flash and a complete security architecture. Same software, same accessories, far more headroom.
Highlights
- Dual architecture : choose at boot between the Arm Cortex-M33 cores or the open source RISC-V Hazard3 cores.
- Twice as much memory as the Pico: 520 KB of SRAM and 4 MB of flash.
- Documented security : Arm TrustZone, signed boot, 8 KB of OTP for keys, SHA-256 acceleration, hardware random number generator.
- 12 PIO state machines instead of 8, to create custom interfaces.
- Pico 1 compatible : same pinout, same add-on boards, reusable C/C++ and MicroPython code.
- Production guaranteed until January 2040 at least.

For a new project, the Pico 2 is the obvious choice. The original Raspberry Pi Pico remains relevant for reproducing an existing project or following a tutorial exactly.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Headers to solder : the Pico 2 is supplied without pin headers; they must be soldered to mount it on a breadboard.
- No Wi-Fi on this version.
- It is a microcontroller : it does not run Raspberry Pi OS, it executes a C/C++ or MicroPython program.
- Data cable : use a micro-USB cable that carries data, not just a charging cable.
- Firmware : download the MicroPython firmware or compile your program specifically for the RP2350.
Recommended accessories
- USB to micro-USB cable : drag-and-drop programming and power.
- Raspberry Pi Debug Probe : SWD debugging and serial link to go further.
- Male-to-female jumper wires: to connect sensors and modules.
- PicoBricks kit : ready-to-use modules for learning with the Pico family.
Uses and projects
- Sensors and standalone devices running on batteries.
- Custom controllers : keyboards, gamepads, LED drivers.
- Secure products thanks to signed boot.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Pico and the Pico 2?
The Pico 2 moves to the RP2350 chip: Cortex-M33 or RISC-V cores at 150 MHz, twice the SRAM and flash, hardware security and 12 PIO state machines.
Is the Pico 2 compatible with Pico accessories?
Yes, the form factor and pinout are identical.
Can it be programmed in MicroPython?
Yes, with the MicroPython firmware for RP2350, or in C/C++ with the Raspberry Pi SDK.
Does the Pico 2 have Wi-Fi?
No, it is the Pico 2 W that adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Are the headers soldered?
No, they need to be soldered on this version.
What does RISC-V Hazard3 mean?
These are two open source cores built into the RP2350, usable instead of the Arm cores.
