Description
Raspberry Pi 4 2GB (Model B 2 GB): the balanced Pi 4 for home automation and retro gaming
The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 2 GB combines the Broadcom BCM2711 SoC (four Cortex-A72 cores at 1.8 GHz), 2 GB of LPDDR4, dual-band Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 and two 4K outputs. With 2 GB, it meets the minimum required by Home Assistant and runs Recalbox or a small server, while remaining frugal and silent. Raspberry Pi guarantees its production until at least January 2034.
Highlights
- 2 GB of RAM : the minimum recommended by Home Assistant for Home Assistant OS, and a comfortable margin over the 1 GB version.
- Dual 4K display via two micro-HDMI ports (up to 4Kp60) and 4Kp60 HEVC hardware decoding.
- Complete networking : Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, PoE possible with a dedicated HAT.
- USB 3.0 to boot from an SSD or USB stick instead of the microSD.
- Huge ecosystem : Pi 4 cases, HATs and tutorials exist by the thousands.

Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- Pi 4 accessories only : cases, PoE HATs and M.2 PCIe HATs designed for the Raspberry Pi 5 are not suitable.
- Display and camera : standard 15-pin connectors, compatible with conventional ribbon cables.
- Power supply : use a 5 V 3 A USB-C power supply; an undersized phone charger causes instability.
- Cooling : under sustained load, a ventilated or heat-dissipating case prevents throttling.
What else you need
- The official 15.3 W USB-C power supply : 5.1 V 3 A, the rating intended for the Pi 4.
- The official micro-HDMI to HDMI cable, essential for connecting a monitor or TV.
- The official Raspberry Pi 4 case, to be completed with its dedicated fan for 24/7 use.
- A SanDisk High Endurance microSD: designed for the repeated writes of a home automation server.
- The Raspberry Pi PoE+ HAT to power the board through the network cable.
Need more RAM? The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4 GB is better suited to desktop use and heavier setups. The whole range is on the page Raspberry Pi 4.
Uses and projects
- Home Assistant server with a few add-ons (MQTT, Zigbee2MQTT, ESPHome).
- retro gaming console with Recalbox: 8-bit and 16-bit consoles and PlayStation run very comfortably, heavier systems depending on the game.
- 3D printing with OctoPrint, network audio with Volumio or moOde, VPN WireGuard.
- Multimedia center Kodi / LibreELEC thanks to 4K HEVC decoding.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Raspberry Pi 4 2 GB enough for Home Assistant?
Yes: Home Assistant requires a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM and a microSD of at least 32 GB. For many add-ons or video analysis, choose 4 or 8 GB.
What is the processor frequency, 1.5 or 1.8 GHz?
Current boards run at 1.8 GHz according to the official datasheet. The first Pi 4 revisions ran at 1.5 GHz.
Which operating system should I install on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B?
Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit via Raspberry Pi Imager for general use, or Home Assistant OS, Recalbox or LibreELEC directly, depending on the project.
Can it be used as a desktop computer?
For simple browsing and light office work, yes. For many tabs or video conferencing, choose the 4 GB version or higher.
