Description
Official Raspberry Pi 5 fan (Active Cooler): active cooling
The Active Cooler is the official fan for the Raspberry Pi 5 used without a case. It combines a one-piece anodised aluminium heatsink with a temperature-controlled blower fan. It attaches in seconds with two spring-loaded clips, transfers heat through pre-fitted thermal pads and plugs into the board's FAN connector. The result: your Raspberry Pi 5 keeps its full clock speed, even under heavy load.
Highlights
- Anodised aluminium heatsink in a single piece, covering the hot components.
- PWM-controlled fan with tachometer, up to 8,000 rpm and 1.09 CFM.
- Pre-applied thermal pads and spring-loaded clips: tool-free mounting.
- Powered by the board via the 4-pin fan connector, with no wiring to the GPIO.
- HAT compatible : the official M.2 HAT+ mounts on top using its standoffs.
- Guaranteed production until at least January 2036.

The Active Cooler is for the Raspberry Pi 5 only. For a Raspberry Pi 4 or 3, refer to the solutions in the table.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Exclusive to the Raspberry Pi 5 : it uses the mounting holes and FAN connector specific to this board.
- Not with the official Pi 5 case : the case has its own fan on the same connector.
- Permanent mounting : removal damages the clips and thermal pads; they would need replacing.
- Board powered off during mounting, and fan connector inserted the right way round.
- Hot surface : the metal can get hot, avoid touching it during operation.
Step-by-step mounting
- Shut down and unplug the Raspberry Pi 5.
- Remove the protective film from the thermal pads under the Active Cooler.
- Place the Active Cooler in position without knocking the connectors, following the diagram printed on the box.
- Align the two white clips with the holes provided, then press evenly until they click.
- Plug the cable into the FAN connector, the right way round; if you feel resistance, remove it and check the orientation.
The fan starts automatically as soon as the processor temperature requires it; no configuration is needed under Raspberry Pi OS.
Recommended accessories
- Raspberry Pi 5 8GB : the board to be cooled.
- Raspberry Pi 5 Bumper : protects the underside, compatible with the Active Cooler.
- Official M.2 HAT+ : fits above the Active Cooler.
- Official 27 W USB-C power supply: for a stable board under load.
Uses and projects
- Home server or Home Assistant running 24 hours a day.
- Compiling and local AI : sustained processor load without throttling.
- Prototyping on a bare board with a HAT.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Raspberry Pi 5 need a fan?
For light use it is not essential, but under sustained load active cooling prevents throttling. The Active Cooler or the official case is recommended.
How do I connect the Raspberry Pi 5 fan?
To the 4-pin connector marked FAN on the board, which powers and controls the fan.
Does the Active Cooler work on a Raspberry Pi 4?
No. For a Pi 4 in its official case, choose the fan for the official Raspberry Pi 4 case.
What about a Raspberry Pi 3 B+?
Passive heatsinks are enough in most cases.
Is it noisy?
It is temperature-controlled: slow or stopped at low load, it only speeds up when necessary.
Can it be removed and refitted?
This is not recommended: the clips and thermal pads degrade when removed.
