Description
Case for Compute Module 5 IO Board: the official ventilated metal case for the CM5IO
The IO case for Compute Module 5 is the official enclosure for the Compute Module 5 IO Board. Made of two-part sheet metal, it protects the board and its CM5, integrates a controllable fan and gives access to all the useful connectors. It turns your CM5IO prototype into a compact device, ready to sit on a desk or in a rack.
Highlights
- Two-part sheet metal, approximately 350 g.
- Brushless PWM fan with tachometer, 21.7 dB, removable.
- Cutouts for HDMI, Ethernet, USB-A, USB-C power and microSD reader.
- Slots for CSI-2 camera or DSI display ribbon cables.
- Antenna opening SMA for the Wi-Fi antenna kit.
- Room for an M.2 SSD or a PoE+ HAT+ inside.

Which one should you choose?
| Solution | Board housed | Cooling | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CM5 IO case (this product) | Compute Module 5 IO Board and Compute Module 5 | PWM fan | CM5 development and small production runs |
| Official Raspberry Pi 5 case | Raspberry Pi 5 | built-in fan | single-board project |
| EDATEC ED-IPC1100 industrial mini PC | built in (Compute Module) | depending on manufacturer | field use: 4G, RS485, DIN rail |
Our advice: this case is the natural companion to the CM5 IO Board. For deployment in an electrical cabinet, a ready-to-use industrial mini PC saves time.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- CM5 IO Board only : the case does not accept any other board.
- Two versions : version 2 houses the fan and the CM5 heatsink together; version 1 requires removing the fan to install the heatsink.
- Antenna : connect the U.FL connector on the module before fitting the heatsink, as access is easier.
- microSD : push-push reader, contacts facing down; a silicone pad prevents a card from falling into the case.
- Fan : connect it to the FAN connector (J14) on the IO Board.
Assembly in a few steps
- Open the case by removing the side screws, then separate the lid from the base.
- Install the CM5 on the IO Board, place the assembly in the base and secure it with four M2.5 screws in the corner holes.
- Connect the fan on the lid to the board's FAN connector, or remove it if you do not want it.
- Add the options : SMA antenna, heatsink, M.2 SSD, HAT, camera or display ribbon cables routed through the rear slots.
- Close it by aligning the power button, without overtightening the screws.
Box contents
- two-part case with pre-installed fan
- screws for fixing the board and the lid
- silicone pad for the microSD reader
Recommended accessories
- Official Raspberry Pi antenna kit : fits into the dedicated SMA opening.
- Raspberry Pi USB-C 27 W power supply : 5 V 5 A power for the IO Board.
- WaveShare M.2 2242 NVMe SSD : for the board's M.2 slot, housed in the case.
Uses and projects
- Demanding environments : deploy a Raspberry Pi industrial mini PC.
- Edge computing : Edge AI cluster with the CM5.
- Demonstrator or protected test bench for trade shows and laboratories.
Frequently asked questions
Is this case suitable for the Compute Module 5 IO Board?
Yes, it is designed exclusively for it, with its Compute Module 5 installed.
Can the CM5 heatsink be used with the fan?
Yes with version 2 of the case. On version 1, the fan must be removed.
Can a camera or DSI display be connected?
Yes, the ribbon cables pass through the rear slots to the board's CAM/DISP ports.
Is the fan noisy?
Raspberry Pi specifies 21.7 dB; it is PWM-controlled by the system.
Are the IO Board and module included?
No, the case is sold on its own.
Can it house an NVMe SSD?
Yes. The case leaves room for an SSD in the IO Board's M.2 slot, or for a PoE+ HAT+ to power the whole unit over the network cable.
