Total Phase: protocol analyzers and adapters for embedded systems

Total Phase designs debugging and development tools for engineers working on embedded systems. Its stated mission is to provide visibility into what happens inside these systems, with affordable, high-quality, high-performance solutions. This page presents the models we have selected and helps you choose the one that matches your bus and your need: observing an exchange or controlling it. To compare with the shop's other tools, see the category Test and debugging tools.

A brand of tools for embedded systems

The company states that its tools are used by Fortune 500 companies as well as small businesses and research institutes. It highlights the ease of use and integration of its products, and says it takes customer feedback into account to improve them. Its devices are made in the USA.

Its catalog notably covers the I2C, SPI, USB and CAN buses. The Beagle analyzers and Cheetah adapter shown here connect to a computer over USB and are used with free downloadable software, on Windows, Linux and macOS.

Analyzer or adapter: which should you choose?

A protocol analyzer listens to a bus without disturbing it and displays what travels on it: it is the tool for understanding an exchange or finding an error. A host adapter on the other hand plays an active role on the bus: it sends commands and can program a memory.

Beagle USB analyzers

Beagle USB 12

It monitors Full Speed and Low Speed non-intrusively, with 21 ns resolution and USB descriptor decoding. Powered by the USB bus, it suits devices that do not exceed 12 Mbit/s.

Beagle USB 480

It goes up to High Speed at 480 Mbit/s, with 16.67 ns resolution, a 64 MB onboard buffer, real-time USB class decoding and 4 digital inputs and 4 outputs to synchronize with external logic.

Beagle USB 5000 v2 Ultimate Edition

It monitors USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 simultaneously, up to 5 Gbit/s. It has a 4 GB buffer, advanced state-based triggers and synchronization between several analyzers to follow traffic across hubs.

I2C and SPI tools

Beagle I2C/SPI

This portable analyzer monitors I2C, SPI and MDIO, with bit-level timing down to 20 ns. Data is streamed continuously to the computer and packets are displayed decoded, in real time. MDIO is used with the API and Data Center software version 2.20.

Cheetah

This USB to SPI adapter works as a master, at over 40 MHz, with up to 3 slave selects. It was designed to communicate with SPI Flash memories and program them, in-system or stand-alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Total Phase software paid?

The Data Center software, APIs and LabVIEW drivers for the products shown here are offered free of charge by the manufacturer, as downloads.

Which operating system do you need?

Total Phase lists Windows 7, 10, 11 and later, the Linux distributions Red Hat, SuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora, and macOS 13 and later.

Can I install this software on a Raspberry Pi?

The manufacturer specifies a computer with an Intel or AMD processor as the minimum configuration and does not mention the Raspberry Pi. Plan on a PC or Mac as your analysis computer.

Which USB analyzer should you choose?

Start from your device's speed: up to 12 Mbit/s, the Beagle USB 12 is enough; up to 480 Mbit/s, you need the Beagle USB 480; for USB 3.0, the Beagle USB 5000 v2.
