Description
Raspberry Pi 5 4 GB (4GB): the balanced Pi 5 for most projects
The Raspberry Pi 5 4GB combines the quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor at 2.4 GHz, 4 GB of LPDDR4X and all the new features of the Raspberry Pi 5: PCIe port for NVMe SSDs, power button, real-time clock, dual 4K output. According to Raspberry Pi, it delivers 2 to 3 times the CPU performance of the Raspberry Pi 4.
Highlights
- Cortex-A76 at 2.4 GHz and VideoCore VII GPU at 800 MHz: a smooth desktop and responsive servers.
- 4 GB RAM : the sweet spot for home automation, a media server, Docker or programming.
- PCIe 2.0 x1 : boot from an NVMe SSD with an M.2 HAT.
- In-house RP1 chip : more than double the USB bandwidth, microSD in SDR104 mode twice as fast.
- Two 4-lane MIPI connectors for cameras or displays, power button and RTC.
- Production guaranteed until January 2036 at least.
Technical specifications

Which one should you choose?
| Model | RAM | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|
| Pi 5 4GB (this product) | 4 GB | home automation, Pi-hole server, Kodi, programming, retrogaming |
| Raspberry Pi 5 8GB | 8 GB | full desktop, multi-container Docker, NAS |
| Raspberry Pi 5 16GB | 16 GB | local AI, virtual machines, large servers |
| Raspberry Pi 500 | 8 GB | plug-and-play keyboard computer, without PCIe or camera |
For a first versatile Pi 5, the 4 GB version is enough for the vast majority of projects. Choose 8 GB or more if you are aiming for heavy desktop use or many containers.
Compatibility and pitfalls
- Power supply : with a 5 V 3 A supply, the Pi 5 boots but limits the current on its USB ports. Aim for 5 V 5 A.
- Cooling : under sustained load, an active cooler prevents throttling.
- Camera ribbon cables : the MIPI connectors are 22-pin; older 15-pin cameras require an adapter cable.
- Pi 4 accessories : Pi 4 cases and PoE HATs are not compatible with the Pi 5.
- Video : micro-HDMI only, make sure you have the right cable.
Recommended accessories
- Official 27 W USB-C power supply : 5.1 V 5 A, the reference power supply for the Pi 5.
- Ventilateur / dissipateur pour Raspberry Pi 5 : maintains performance under load.
- Official Raspberry Pi 5 case : built-in fan and access to all ports.
- M.2 HAT+ for Raspberry Pi 5: for an NVMe SSD via PCIe.
- SanDisk Ultra microSD card: to install Raspberry Pi OS.
Uses and projects
- Home automation with Home Assistant.
- Network server : Pi-hole, VPN, monitoring.
- Rétrogaming and media center.

Frequently asked questions
What are the official specifications of the Raspberry Pi 5 4GB?
Quad-core Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz, 4 GB LPDDR4X-4267, VideoCore VII, two 4Kp60 outputs, 2 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, PCIe 2.0 x1.
Is 4 GB enough?
Yes for home automation, lightweight servers, programming and multimedia. Beyond that, for a very heavy desktop workload or local AI, choose 8 or 16 GB.
Which power supply should I choose?
A 5 V 5 A USB-C power supply such as the official 27 W one.
Do I need a fan?
It is recommended as soon as the processor works for long periods, to avoid frequency throttling.
Can it boot from an SSD?
Yes, with an M.2 HAT on the PCIe port, or via USB 3.0.
What's in the box?
The Raspberry Pi 5 4GB board only: power supply, microSD card and cables must be purchased separately.
