The NVMe Base Duo is an expansion board dedicated to the Raspberry Pi 5, allowing you to add up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs. Compact, sturdy and optimised, it uses the PCIe Gen2 interface of the Pi 5 to deliver high storage speeds and great flexibility.
Dual NVMe connector for more freedom
Thanks to its two M.2 Key B slots, compatible with 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 formats, the NVMe Base Duo lets you use two SSDs at the same time. You can configure:
- Extended storage, combining the capacity of both drives.
- A redundant setup (RAID 1) to protect your data.
- Two independent partitions, to separate the system from your data.
Transfer rates reach around 450 MB/s in total, much faster than a microSD card.
Direct boot from an SSD
With the Raspberry Pi 5 firmware update, you can now boot directly from an NVMe SSD installed in the NVMe Base Duo. This brings a considerable gain in responsiveness, reliability and lifespan compared with standard SD cards.

The kit includes everything you need for immediate installation:

The assembly is designed to be mounted under the Raspberry Pi 5, but it can also be installed above it, depending on your needs. GPIO access remains available thanks to a design intended for compatibility with other HATs.
Thermal management and compact design
The PCB is designed to limit heat build-up and aid heat dissipation. An active cooler or a ventilated case is recommended when running NVMe SSDs under sustained loads. Despite the compact assembly, the NVMe Base Duo keeps convenient access to the essential connectors.

Points to note
Using two SSDs at the same time shares the PCIe x1 bandwidth of the Raspberry Pi 5. As a result, each drive does not reach the theoretical maximum speed of a single NVMe board, but the whole setup remains far faster than a microSD solution.
Mounting under the board may restrict direct access to the microSD slot, but this is not a problem since you can boot directly from an SSD.
