Description
Raspberry Pi Codec Zero (IQaudio): microphone, speaker and I2S audio in Zero format
The Codec Zero is the audio input and output board of the IQaudio range, now produced by Raspberry Pi. In the form factor of a Raspberry Pi Zero, it combines a 24-bit Dialog DA7212 codec, a built-in MEMS microphone, a 1.2 W mono speaker output, two programmable LEDs and a programmable button. Everything you need to build a connected doorbell, a walkie-talkie or a voice assistant without a soldering iron.
Highlights
- Two-way audio : recording and playback on the same board, over I2S.
- Built-in microphone, automatically disabled when an external electret microphone is plugged into the 3.5 mm jack.
- 1.2 W mono speaker output into 8 Ω on a screw terminal, no external amplifier needed.
- Built-in signal processing : automatic level control and 5-band equalizer.
- Ready-made user interface : green LED (GPIO 23), red LED (GPIO 24) and button (GPIO 27).

Which one should you choose?
| Card | Microphone input | Output | Resolution | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Codec Zero (this product) | Yes, built-in + external | 1.2 W mono speaker, headphones | 24-bit / 96 kHz | Voice, intercom, sound toys |
| DAC+ | No | RCA, headphones | 24-bit / 192 kHz | Hi-fi listening |
| DAC Pro | No | RCA, headphones, balanced | 24-bit / 192 kHz | Demanding hi-fi |
| DigiAMP+ | No | 2 passive speakers up to 35 W | 24-bit / 192 kHz | Passive speakers |
Our advice : if your project listens or speaks, the Codec Zero is the only board in the range with a microphone. For high-resolution music, choose a DAC.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- Compatible with any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin GPIO: Pi Zero W and Zero 2 W, Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5.
- Pi Zero without header : the 40-pin header must be soldered onto the board.
- Audio configuration : once the HAT is detected, load the ALSA settings provided by Raspberry Pi to enable the microphone and speaker, as described in the official documentation.
- Pins used : I2S (GPIO 18 to 21), I2C (GPIO 2 and 3), plus GPIO 23, 24 and 27 for the LEDs and the button. No second I2S audio HAT possible.
- Speaker : go for a passive 8 Ω model; the output is limited to 1.2 W.
Recommended accessories
- The Raspberry Pi Zero W : same form factor as the Codec Zero, for a compact setup with Wi-Fi.
- The HDMI and USB adapter kit for Pi Zero for initial setup with a screen and keyboard.
- The official 12.5 W micro-USB power supply : stable, it prevents the crackling caused by a weak power supply.
Uses and projects
Connected doorbell, intercom, modernized vintage radio, smart speaker, voice message box for children: the official documentation even shows a “chatter box” that records clips and plays them back at the press of a button. Frequently asked questions
Does the Codec Zero have a built-in microphone?
Yes, a MEMS microphone. It is automatically disabled when an external electret microphone is plugged into the 3.5 mm jack.
Does it only work on the Raspberry Pi Zero?
No. It has the form factor of a Zero but fits any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin GPIO, including the Pi 5.
How powerful is the speaker output?
The mono output delivers 1.2 W into 8 Ω: perfect for voice, not for filling a room with sound.
What audio quality?
24-bit codec, sampling rates from 8 to 96 kHz.
Is soldering required?
Not for normal use, unless your Pi Zero has no GPIO header or you add RCA sockets on the AUX pads.
Are the LEDs and the button programmable?
Yes: green LED on GPIO 23, red LED on GPIO 24 and button on GPIO 27, usable for example with gpiozero in Python.
