Description
PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 5: power and connect your Pi with a single cable
No more multiple sockets and piles of cables. This Waveshare PoE / PoE+ HAT powers your Raspberry Pi 5 directly through the Ethernet cable while also providing the network connection. One cable, two functions.
Why does PoE make life easier on a Raspberry Pi project?
When you deploy a Raspberry Pi far from a mains socket (garage, attic, sheltered outdoor area, technical room, ceiling for a camera…), you quickly run into a simple problem: you need power and network access in the same place. With PoE (Power over Ethernet), a single RJ45 cable is enough:
- No power adapter to find or run
- No electrical socket needed nearby
- Just one cable to route, wherever the project is
Technical specifications
- Standard : IEEE 802.3af/at (PoE / PoE+)
- PoE input : 38V to 57V DC (supplied by a PoE switch or an injector)
- Power output : 5V up to 5A via the GPIO header
- Connector : 40-pin GPIO, standard Raspberry Pi format
- Isolated switching power supply (SMPS) for clean, efficient conversion
- Dimensions : 64.98 × 64.98 mm
- Compatibility : Raspberry Pi 5
- Case compatibility : compatible with the official Raspberry Pi 5 case
What it changes in practice
One installation, two needs covered. The HAT takes the power carried over the Ethernet cable (38-57V DC) and converts it into a stable 5V/5A to power your Raspberry Pi 5, which otherwise stays connected to the network as usual.
Up to 5A available. Enough to cover the needs of the Raspberry Pi 5 even with power-hungry USB peripherals connected (external drive, hub, dongle).
Compact, easy-to-integrate mounting. The HAT attaches directly to the 40-pin GPIO header, with no adaptation or electronic tinkering. It is designed to fit inside the official Raspberry Pi 5 case without modification or cutting: you keep a clean, protected setup even with the HAT added.
⚠️ Important note before buying
PoE only works if your Ethernet cable is connected to a PoE power source compatible with IEEE 802.3af/at:
- A PoE/PoE+ network switch
- Or a PoE injector placed between your standard switch and the Raspberry Pi
Without one of these two sources, the Ethernet cable will only provide network access, not power: you will then need to keep a standard USB-C power supply.
Box contents
- 1 × PoE HAT (J)
- 1 × 2×2 header, 2.54 mm pitch
- 1 × 2×20 header, 2.54 mm pitch
- 1 × standoff kit
Maker project ideas
- Home server or mini-NAS installed far from a socket (cellar, garage, technical room)
- Network monitoring or CCTV camera, powered by a single cable
- Connected display (dashboard, digital signage) mounted on the ceiling or up high
- Home automation hub or remote IoT node in the house
- Integration into a closed enclosure with no accessible mains socket
Installation
The HAT clips directly onto the 40-pin GPIO header of the Raspberry Pi 5, with the supplied standoff kit for stable mounting. It fits easily inside the official Raspberry Pi 5 case. Once connected to an active PoE Ethernet cable, the Raspberry Pi boots up powered and connected, with no other wiring.
In a nutshell
The Waveshare PoE+ HAT radically simplifies deploying a Raspberry Pi 5 in a place that is hard to reach electrically. One Ethernet cable, a stable power supply up to 5A, full compatibility with the official case, and your project is ready, with no power adapter or extension lead to deal with.
