Description
Raspberry Pi PoE HAT (PoE+): power your Raspberry Pi over PoE with a single cable
Data and power in the same Ethernet cable: the official Raspberry Pi PoE+ HAT turns your Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ into an IEEE 802.3at-compliant Power over Ethernet device. No more power brick next to each board, and a built-in fan cools the processor.
Highlights
- PoE+ IEEE 802.3at-2009 standard, class 4 device: it draws power from a PoE+ switch or injector.
- 5 V at 4 A output: enough to power the board and its USB peripherals without compromise.
- Fully isolated switched-mode power supply, for the safety of the board and the network.
- 25 × 25 mm brushless fan (2.2 CFM) controlled over I2C: it starts and stops according to the processor temperature.
- Long-term availability : production guaranteed by the manufacturer until at least January 2030.
Technical specifications
| Features | Official value |
|---|---|
| Standard | IEEE 802.3at-2009 (PoE+) |
| Input voltage | 37 to 57 V DC, class 4 device |
| Output | 5 V DC / 4 A |
| Cooling | 25 × 25 mm brushless fan, 2.2 CFM, speed control |
| Connection | 40-pin GPIO + 4-pin PoE header |
| Operating temperature | 0 à +50 °C |
| Board dimensions | 65 × 56.5 mm |
| Compatible boards | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ |
Which one should you choose?
The official PoE+ HAT connects to the 4 PoE pins found only on the Pi 3 B+ and Pi 4. For a Raspberry Pi 5, another solution is needed:
| Solution | Target boards | Principle | Key points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official PoE+ HAT (this product) | Pi 4, Pi 3 B+ | HAT on GPIO + PoE pins | 802.3at, 5 V 4 A, built-in fan |
| PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 5 | Pi 5 | HAT dedicated to the Pi 5 | Designed for the official Pi 5 case |
| PCIe to M.2 adapter with PoE | Pi 5 | PoE and M.2 SSD on one board | NVMe storage and PoE combined |
| PoE / USB-C 5 V 4 A splitter | Boards with USB-C input | External unit, no HAT | Leaves the GPIO free |
Our advice : for a Pi 4 or Pi 3 B+ in a rack or on the ceiling, go for this official HAT; if the GPIO must stay free, choose the splitter.
Compatibility and pitfalls to avoid
- PoE+ equipment is required upstream : a PoE+ switch or 802.3at injector. A non-PoE switch will not power the board.
- Raspberry Pi 3 : only the 3 B+ model has the PoE pins. The Pi 3 Model B and Pi 3 A+ are not compatible.
- Raspberry Pi 5 not supported by this model: see the alternatives above.
- A single power source : when the HAT is fitted, the Pi is powered only through the Ethernet cable. Do not also connect the USB power supply.
- Housing : the HAT and its fan prevent most standard cases from closing; plan for a ventilated case that accepts a HAT.
- Assembly : first screw the supplied standoffs into the four corners, then press the HAT onto both headers (40 + 4 pins). When removing it, pull straight up.
Recommended accessories
- The official Raspberry Pi PoE+ injector : adds PoE to an existing network, for one or two Pis.
- The TP-Link 4-port PoE+ switch : powers several boards from a single device, perfect for a small cluster.
- The RJ45 CAT6 Ethernet cable: it carries both Gigabit data and power.
- The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4 GB : the reference board for this HAT.
Uses and projects
Surveillance camera mounted on the ceiling, sensor installed in a technical room, digital signage screen, cluster of boards in a rack: wherever a mains socket is missing, PoE simplifies installation. Frequently asked questions
Is the PoE+ HAT compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5?
No. The Pi 5 is not on the official list; choose the PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 5 or the PoE / USB-C splitter.
Which PoE standard does the switch need?
The HAT is an 802.3at (PoE+) class 4 device: use an 802.3at PoE+ switch or injector.
Do I still need to connect the USB-C power supply?
No, and you must not: with the HAT fitted, the Pi is powered only through the Ethernet cable.
Does the fan run all the time?
No, it is controlled over I2C by the Raspberry Pi and switches on according to the processor temperature.
Does it work on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B?
No, only the Pi 3 Model B+ has the required 4-pin PoE header.
What has changed compared with the previous PoE HAT?
The PoE+ HAT follows the 802.3at standard and delivers 5 V at 4 A; it keeps the same mechanical footprint as its predecessor.
