Compatibility and pitfalls
- Adapter required : the Pi 5 has no M.2 slot. Use the HAT+ M.2 for Raspberry Pi 5 or the M.2 HAT+ Compact.
- Official case : the M.2 HAT+ Compact slides into the official Pi 5 case around its fan, but you cannot fit the Active Cooler underneath.
- No Pi 4 or Pi 500 : they do not expose PCIe.
- Only one PCIe port : no AI HAT+ at the same time on a single M.2 HAT.
- Power supply : a 5 V 5 A power source is recommended for a Pi 5 with an SSD.
Installation in four steps
- Mount the SSD on the M.2 HAT and secure it with its screw.
- Connect the HAT to the Pi 5 with the PCIe ribbon cable, with the Pi switched off and unplugged.
- Write the operating system to the SSD with Raspberry Pi Imager, from a USB reader or directly from the Pi.
- Set the boot order if needed with raspi-config, then remove the microSD card.
