Description

BPI-R3 Mini antenna kit for Banana Pi, compatible with BPI-WiFi6 Mini

This external Wi-Fi antenna kit equips Banana Pi's two compact routers, the BPI-R3 Mini and the BPI-WiFi6 Mini. These boards are supplied bare: without antennas, their dual-band Wi-Fi 6 is unusable or very limited in range. The antennas connect to the board's U.FL coaxial connectors.

Why dedicated antennas

  • Range and throughput : Wi-Fi 6 multiplies the streams (MIMO); each radio chain needs its own antenna to reach the advertised speeds.
  • Dual band : 2.4 GHz for range, 5 GHz for speed.
  • Neat installation in the metal case for BPI-R3 Mini and BPI-WiFi6 Mini.

Radio requirements of each board

Card Wi-Fi chip Configuration Maximum advertised throughput
BPI-R3 Mini MediaTek MT7976C 2×2 on 2.4 GHz + 3×3 on 5 GHz Dual-band Wi-Fi 6
BPI-WiFi6 Mini Triductor TR5220 2×2 on 2.4 GHz (40 MHz) + 2×2 on 5 GHz (160 MHz) Up to 3 Gbit/s combined

Compatibility and pitfalls

  • Wi-Fi only : these antennas do not replace the antennas of a 4G/5G modem installed in the M.2 B-key slot.
  • Handling : U.FL connectors are fragile; clip them on straight and avoid plugging and unplugging them often.
  • Orientation : spread the antennas apart and point them in different directions to improve indoor reception.
  • Other boards : for the BPI-R4 and its Wi-Fi 7 card, plan for tri-band 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz antennas.

Uses

  • Wi-Fi 6 access point for the home or a small office.
  • Travel router or 4G/5G gateway with Wi-Fi sharing.
  • Choosing the right radio technology for your devices: read LoRaWAN, Zigbee or Wi-Fi: which protocol to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Is this kit compatible with the BPI-R3 Mini and the BPI-WiFi6 Mini?

Yes, it is designed for these two boards, which share the same form factor.

Are the antennas essential?

Yes, for normal Wi-Fi use: without an antenna, the range is very short and the radio chip works in poor conditions.

Can they be used for 4G or 5G?

No, a cellular modem requires antennas suited to its own frequency bands.

Where can I find help configuring the Wi-Fi?

See our guide to getting started with a Banana Pi, then the board's web interface (192.168.1.1 on the WiFi6 Mini).
