What you should know before buying
- Direct play recommended : the Raspberry Pi 5 has no hardware video encoder and Jellyfin has dropped hardware acceleration on Raspberry Pi. The kit is ideal when your devices play files as they are; transcoding is done by the CPU and remains limited.
- Formats : favour files that your TVs and apps play natively (H.264, HEVC depending on the device).
- NVMe SSD only : the case accepts M.2 NVMe SSDs with M key or B+M key, not M.2 SATA SSDs.
- PCIe port in use by the SSD: no additional M.2 HAT or AI HAT.
- Ethernet recommended for high-definition films.
Going further
- An RJ45 CAT6 Ethernet cable to connect the server to your router at Gigabit speed.
- The M.2 NVMe to USB 3.1 adapter to clone or back up an SSD.
- Need more space? The Raspberry Pi 5 dual NVMe NAS kit is well suited to storing large libraries.
- For a player connected to the TV, see the kit Kodi Raspberry Pi 5.
Uses
- Family media library with one profile per person.
- Music and photos centralised, accessible from every device in the home.
- Cloud personnel : CasaOS lets you add other applications, see CasaOS on Raspberry Pi.
All our media kits are gathered in the multimedia kits ; also read the overview of our Kodi, Plex and Jellyfin kits.
Frequently asked questions
Does Jellyfin run well on a Raspberry Pi 5?
Yes for direct play, when the playback device supports the file format. For intensive transcoding, Jellyfin recommends hardware with a video encoder, which the Raspberry Pi 5 lacks.
Jellyfin on Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 3?
Jellyfin can be installed on these boards, but they are significantly slower, and hardware acceleration is no longer supported by Jellyfin on Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi 5 in this kit offers a processor two to three times faster than the Pi 4.
Can an external hard drive be added?
Yes, to the USB 3.0 ports, for example for a large library; a 3.5-inch drive will need its own power supply.
Do I need a subscription?
No. Jellyfin is free and open source, with no mandatory online account.
