Description

Visit pre-flashed Recalbox microSD card for Raspberry Pi 5 (64 GB) lets you turn your Raspberry Pi 5 into a retro gaming console without downloading an image, using flashing software or doing any prior configuration. Simply insert the card, connect a controller and an HDMI display, then power up the board: the system boots straight into the Recalbox interface.

Recalbox is a free and open-source operating system, developed in France, dedicated to emulating consoles, computers and arcade machines. The 10 branch, released in February 2026, brought official support for the Raspberry Pi 5 and a completely redesigned interface. Version 10.1, released in September 2026, is the latest stable version at the time this product page was written. The system updates directly from its menus when the console is connected to the Internet.

The 64 GB capacity offers a good balance: the system takes up a small part of the card, and the remaining space holds your save files, screenshots, box art and a sizeable library of 8 and 16-bit systems, with room for a few CD-based games.

Highlights

  • Ready to play: no installation, the card boots directly on a Raspberry Pi 5.
  • Recalbox 10: the system generation designed to harness the power of the Raspberry Pi 5.
  • More than 100 supported systems: home consoles, handhelds, microcomputers and arcade.
  • Controllers detected automatically: most common USB and Bluetooth controllers (Xbox, PlayStation, 8BitDo, Switch Pro) work without manual setup.
  • Convenience features: save states, rewind, shaders and overlays, multi-system search, RetroAchievements and online play (Netplay).
  • Media center: Kodi is built in to play your movies, TV series and music from the same interface.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 makes possible with Recalbox

The Raspberry Pi 5 is significantly more powerful than the Pi 4: the Recalbox team estimates it at around three to four times faster. This headroom means smooth emulation of 8, 16 and 32-bit generations, the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PSP, as well as the arrival of systems previously out of reach for a single-board computer.

Recalbox 10 thus added, on Raspberry Pi 5, the GameCubethe Nintendo DS and the Sega Model 3, with a recommendation of at least 4 GB of RAM at launch. Version 10.1 states that 99% of Naomi 2 and Model 3 titles now run at 60 frames per second on the Pi 5. On the memory side, update 10.0.8 cut the RAM usage of the interface and games by more than half, to the point that the publisher now recommends the Raspberry Pi 5 2 GB as the reference model for classic systems.

Version 10.1 also introduced Recalbox Challenges (an arcade challenge every two weeks), a built-in manual viewer and on-screen guided controller setup.

Compatibility and what you need to know

This card is prepared for the Raspberry Pi 5. For a Raspberry Pi 4, choose the dedicated version, as the system image is different. To get started, you will need:

  • a Raspberry Pi 5 and its official 27 W USB-C power supply (5 V, 5 A);
  • a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable;
  • at least one USB or Bluetooth controller;
  • ideally a ventilated case, as the Pi 5 heats up under sustained load.

On first boot, Recalbox automatically expands its partition to fill the whole card: allow one to two minutes before the interface appears, and do not cut the power.

Recalbox does not include any commercial games. It is your responsibility to only use game files you legally own the rights to, for example from your own cartridges or discs, or freely distributed homebrew and public domain games. Some systems also require BIOS files that you must obtain legally.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add my games to the card?

The easiest way is to connect the console to your local network: the Recalbox share folder appears on your computer and you just drop your files into the subfolder of the relevant system (share/roms). You can also use a USB flash drive.

Will the system be up to date?

The card is flashed with the stable version available when it is prepared. If a newer version is released later, Recalbox offers it directly from its menus when the console is connected to the Internet.

Can I use this card in a Raspberry Pi 4?

No, the Recalbox image is specific to each board generation. A pre-flashed version for Raspberry Pi 4 is available separately.

Do I need a Raspberry Pi 5 with a lot of RAM?

For 8 to 32-bit consoles and classic arcade, the 2 GB model is enough according to the publisher. For the GameCube, Nintendo DS and Model 3, the Recalbox team recommended at least 4 GB when version 10 was launched.
