Description

The Dragino LWL02 is a compact, battery-powered water leak detector designed for preventive detection in home or industrial environments. Running on the LoRaWANprotocol, it provides long-range, low-power transmission, making it ideal for integration into a connected home automation system controlled by a Raspberry Pi.

Fast and reliable detection

The sensor uses two metal probes connected to a main unit. When liquid comes into contact with these probes, a signal is sent immediately over the LoRaWAN network, triggering alerts or automated actions in a home automation system. Whether in a cellar, under a sink or next to a washing machine, the LWL02 provides constant monitoring to prevent water damage.

Long-range autonomy

The detector runs on 2 AAA batteries, offering a battery life ranging from 2 to 10 years, depending on the frequency of transmissions and detected events. Its low-power design makes it ideal for continuous monitoring with no regular maintenance.

LoRaWAN transmission

Compatible with most LoRaWAN gateways, the LWL02 can transmit its data over long distances with very low power consumption. It sends:

  • Alerts when water is detected.
  • Periodic status messages, including remaining battery life.
  • Event counters, for long-term tracking.

Home automation integration with Raspberry Pi

In home automation, the sensor really comes into its own when integrated into a connected ecosystem controlled by a Raspberry Pi. With a LoRaWAN gateway and software such as Home Assistant or Node-RED, you can:

  • Receive alertes en temps réel (smartphone notifications, emails, audible alarms).
  • Automate scenarios: for example, shut off a water solenoid valve as soon as a leak is detected.
  • Store the event history in a local database.
  • Create a visual dashboard to track water consumption, detections and alerts.

Simple installation

The compact unit (approx. 7 × 3 × 1.5 cm) is easy to mount near the area to be monitored. The probes can be placed on the floor, in a drip tray or directly under an at-risk appliance (water heater, dishwasher). Installation is discreet and requires no maintenance.

Safety and reliability

Thanks to the combination of its long-range protocol and battery life, the LWL02 guarantees 24/7 monitoring even in remote locations or areas without Wi-Fi. It is an essential tool for securing a smart home and protecting a basement, a second home or a technical room.

Typical applications

  • Connected home : integration with Home Assistant or Node-RED via Raspberry Pi.
  • Monitoring sensitive areas : cellars, boiler rooms, server rooms.
  • Industrial prevention : storage areas or workshops where a leak could damage equipment.
  • Second homes : immediate alert in case of water ingress so you can act remotely.

Conclusion

The Dragino LWL02 is a modern, reliable water leak detector perfectly suited to home automation systems. Easy to install, battery-powered and designed for simple integration with Raspberry Pi via LoRaWAN, it is an ideal solution for effectively protecting your home or technical installations against water damage.
