Description

The Dragino AQS01-L is an indoor air quality sensor operating on LoRaWAN, designed to measure CO₂, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure. Compact and self-contained, it is perfectly suited to smart home use and integrates easily into a home automation ecosystem driven by a Raspberry Pi.

A multi-parameter sensor for indoor air

At the heart of the sensor is NDIR technology for measuring CO₂, ensuring reliable accuracy over a range of 400 to 5000 ppm, expandable to 10,000 ppm. In addition:

  • Temperature : from -20 °C to +65 °C, accuracy ±1 °C.
  • Relative humidity : from 0 to 99.9%, accuracy ±3% in the most useful range.
  • Atmospheric pressure : from 300 to 1100 hPa, accuracy ±1 hPa.

Combined, these data provide a complete picture of indoor comfort and can trigger smart home automation actions.

Long-range LoRaWAN communication

Relying on the LoRaWAN protocol, the sensor transmits its data with very low power consumption and a much longer range than conventional Wi-Fi. This makes it ideal for large homes, offices or even multi-story buildings.

The Raspberry Pi, used with a local LoRaWAN gateway, can receive this information and use it to:

  • Create automatic alerts when CO₂ is too high.
  • Trigger home automation scenarios (open a motorized window, turn on a ventilation system or a fan).
  • Track changes in air quality on a centralized dashboard .

Battery life and practical management

The device is powered by a 4000 mAh lithium batteryoffering more than two years of battery life under normal operating conditions. It also features configuration via Bluetooth, making it easy to adjust transmission intervals or alert thresholds, as well as OTA updates to stay up to date without dismantling.

Alarms and logging

The sensor can be configured with alert thresholds for CO₂ and temperature. When a threshold is exceeded, it sends a priority message, allowing a Raspberry Pi based home automation system to react immediately (smartphone notification, e-mail, triggering an action).
In addition, it has internal logging memory that stores measurements if the gateway is unavailable, ensuring no data is lost.

Practical applications with Raspberry Pi

  • Connected home : integration into Home Assistant to monitor air quality room by room and trigger automatic ventilation.
  • Classrooms / offices : monitoring CO₂ levels to maintain good air quality and avoid cognitive fatigue.
  • Smart monitoring : combine data from the AQS01-L with other sensors (soil temperature, humidity, water leaks) for a complete environmental monitoring system via Raspberry Pi.
  • Custom alerts : Telegram notifications, SMS, e-mails or indicator lights triggered directly from the data received by the Pi.

Design and reliability

Compact, discreet and fitted with a ventilated enclosure, the AQS01-L is designed for continuous indoor use. Its LoRaWAN protocol keeps it independent of Wi-Fi, ensuring communication stability even if the home network is disrupted.
